I've been in Costa Rica 2 and a half weeks and only saw one 60, today. Lots of Prado's, 4runners, 79's, 76's. Some 78's, FJ40's and 80's. The beach towns here are a parade of cool old 4WD's.

Is this stuff natural fiber, like does it burn? or is it synthetic and it melts?

I'm looking forward to following this since I have a front axle I'll be doing the same with. On another topic, I crossed into the US of A today to pick up the headliner which I hope to do something innovative with.

Do they salt the roads in winter or do you use studded tires? If salt, then you will want to make sure it is all rust-proofed with inhibiting oils inside and out. For interior space I ripped out the factory headliner since this takes away an inch of head height, which could be the difference...

That's what mine looked like. I mixed up epoxy and put it in a syringe and filled in the cracks around the edge between the welds since they always rust, then painted the whole rim again myself.

I was thinking to weld in some attachment points in the grooves in the roof. You then use these to attach roof panels with a button of some kind. That way it's mostly recessed in the groove. Yeah based on that photo there isn't much of quality that's salvageable, due to the rust. The only things that might be good are the engine and transmission / transfer case but without being able to start it you can't assess those. By some miracle the frame might be OK but you need more photos...

I got one spring in. I was a little concerned that the shackle would be off kilter for connecting to the spring since the rust swelling from the old c channels, plus new torquing of the replacement channel, might tweak the frame and hanger angle. But it all lined up perfectly. Only one issue...
