Transfer Case Rebuild & Modification (High & Low Range Gears and Part-Time 4wd Kit)

So I've done this on a couple of boxes now. Mine was stuck on good too. What I ended up doing to get mine to pop IIRC was to rest the TC on the bench, with the entire weight of the TC resting on a brass drift, which was resting on that bolt, so the entire thing was kind of "propped up" by the...

    1HDFT & 1HDFTE observations-discussion

I'm not an expert, and I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this, but I've heard ticking like that on these Bosch rotary pumps when there's a fuel delivery issue, and your troubleshooting of pumping with the hand primer, and then installing a lift pump, would seem to confirm that. It would...

    Headlights won’t turn on

Yep, that's what I was drawing attention to. I remember this one, because it caught me out. Both my low-beam elements went at the same time, no warning. With the low beams dead, and the high beam lamp not illuminating when it should, I assumed something had failed in the combination switch, and...

    Headlights won’t turn on

@jonheld Ahh right, so you guys do have a different wiring setup over there. Outside US is different:

    Headlights won’t turn on

I'll also add, for my non-US model with the quad lights (but the same is probably true with the single-piece ones in the US) the way power is routed isn't very intuitive. There's one light relay, and both the high and low beams get +12V routed to them all the time when the lights are on. What...

    Arb bumper winches

Yeah, synthetic is superior in every way except lifetime, and durability when abrasion is involved. If you were doing winch pulls every day, steel would be better IMO. Most people use a winch very sparingly though, it's only to get you out of a bind when you've messed up... or in my experience...

    Arb bumper winches

My 80 is running the "commercial" ARB bumper with a Warn 8274 fitted. A rare setup even here in Australia, you won't find more than a handful state-side.

    1998 HDJ80 with 1HDT - Refresh

Do you have a bit more detail on that @SNLC? I'd very much like to make this change on my 80 with the 1HZ engine. My old LN106 hilux had a mod you could do where you swapped the oil cooler housing from a Coaster and it made the filter mount vertically from the bottom, which meant no mess. I hate...

1HZ exhaust valve clearances suspiciously tight - should I pull the head?

Yep, that was my thoughts too. I have an oil pressure gauge plus pressure switch with dash light AND alarm, and a head temp probe on the thermostat housing with a digital readout AND alarm, so I'm well covered for anything that could go wrong with the oil/cooling systems. I'll probably start the...

1HZ exhaust valve clearances suspiciously tight - should I pull the head?

Got the oil analysis back on the donor engine today: Looking pretty good to my eye, although I'd love to hear feedback from anyone who's used these services. The 20ppm aluminium level was flagged, but 20ppm is also the minimum level at which they flag it an issue, and at 19ppm it wouldn't be...

HDJ81 RHD Driver Door Lock – What Controls the “Lift Handle to Lock” Function?

It's not just Japan. All Toyota vehicles with manual door locks I've seen from the 90s were the same here in Australia, and honestly I didn't realise it wasn't worldwide until I saw this thread. It's supposed to make it less likely you accidentally lock your keys in the vehicle. It's a...

Eaton E-Locker: Who? Where? or DIY?

The licensed Harrop versions are commonly used here in Australia. You can see and play around with working versions of them in display cases found in a lot of OppositeLock stores. It's what I plan on using for similar reasons as you, but they're more common and familiar here than in the states...

Theory on preventing frame cracks around steering box and panhard bracket

I have a set of plates from Rampt Customs here in Australia on the parts shelf: https://www.4x4andcamping.com.au/products/rampt-customs-80-105-landcruiser-steering-box-brace-kit It's been waiting on timing, but I'm expecting to be swapping out the engine on my 80 in the next 6-8 months. Plan...

80 Series Front Inner Axle Seal Comparison

Sorry, you clearly wrote axle, but my brain parsed that as hub. It is almost 2am here though, so my brain is functioning even worse than usual.

80 Series Front Inner Axle Seal Comparison

Here's a link to the Aussie terrain tamer site advertising the inner hub seal, so it should be a thing, if you can source it state-side: https://www.terraintamer.com/estore/terrain-tamer-heavy-duty-hub-seal-inner
