    1979 Distributor help

Given the fact that you have a "holy grail" JimC rebuilt carb ready to install...I would recommend sending your distributor out for a proper rebuild by 4Cruisers. You'll be surprised how not expensive it is. 4Cruisers will send you back what looks like a brand new from Toyota 79 distributor...

    Builds Project Pikachu: 1977 FJ40

Hard to know the answer to your question without a side by side comparison on the same rig, but I would ask the guys down at Redline. They may have some insight especially since they’re familiar with your area. I will say my OEM T-Rad unit from CR looks really nice, performs well and it’s really...

    Builds Project Pikachu: 1977 FJ40

I’m pretty familiar with your summer temps in that area of Colorado. If you’re already doing fine with the aluminum radiator when climbing hills in the summer at your altitude, I doubt an OEM radiator will be an improvement. Basically, I’m agreeing with @wngrog it just takes me more words to do so.

    Unobtainuim? 11mm bolts?

@mattressking is absolutely correct. This odd size also applies to one of the four bolts on each of the OEM roll cage mounting pads. It confuses a lot of folks because it's an SAE bolt on a Japanese vehicle. Part of the reasoning behind this standard is because the unusual 7/16 UNF bolts are...

Looking for distributor cap for CA Jan 80 FJ40

Yes these are getting harder to find. Just as an FYI the dizzy cap is identical for both cali-spec and Federal models from 1/79 through 7/80, and the 78 model year cap will also fit your dizzy with the only difference being the size of the vent ports. Some folks have been successful finding an...

    Noisy rear sor brake shoes

@brian that noise is definitely not right. Reminds me of an old S10 pickup I had decades ago that tore off an entire new rear brake shoe lining shortly after installing it. Just a couple thoughts since you seem to have already troubleshot it quite a bit. Does your ‘75 still have drums in the...

76 FJ40 steering box with grease instead of 90w?

To address your original question, when I went through my steering system rebuild I did a lot of research throughout the forum on oil vs. grease in manual steering boxes. There are a lot of staunch positions on both sides of this issue. In the end I decided to go with the folks at Redhead and...

    Rear Main Seal Leak

My experience was exactly the same. I thought initially it was a rear main, but no. In my example the oil pan gasket was the culprit. It blew oil all the way back to the transfer case. With a properly sealed oil pan I now have a clean dry engine, clutch cover, trans and transfer case. I’m now...

76 FJ40 steering box with grease instead of 90w?

My 79 manual steering box was rebuilt by Straight Line Steering down in California. They recommended that it be filled with grease not oil after the rebuild, which is exactly what they did. It’s been running very well for 8 years now.

76 40-Series - Need help with leak source

What @rkymtnflyfisher said. Start high (i.e. valve cover) and work your way to the bottom (oil pan) replacing the gaskets and sealing properly. Looks like your side cover and clutch cover haven’t been touched in a good while.

    Leaking Timing Cover Gasket

@rstoddard you've already got some really knowledgeable guys on this thread, but I wanted to share my lessons as it may save you a ton of work. I've had timing covers leak after very carefully replacing them exactly per the Poser method (in the FAQ). What I did then was clean everything with a...

Terminated wire question, beneath drivers seat

This is correct. It’s the thermo sensor for the Cat. Mine is still attached so I can confirm this. The wire enters the main harness under the console.

    Hard top threaded holes

Seat belt mounting points. Bottom two are for the retractor. Top is for the shoulder belt loop. The top hole remained on hard tops even into the 80s for the non-US market which didn't have a roll bar mounting option.

    hose clamp sources

Prep work is as important as the clamps themselves. If you're fighting leaks, be sure that your mating surfaces are nice and round, and not overly pitted or rusted. You might need to replace a thermostat housing or heater coupling if that's the case. Hoses should be in new or nearly-new...

    Radiator Replacement and Growing

Front Main seal requires removal of the timing cover. So the crank pulley must be pulled off. If the timing cover or FMS is leaking, now’s the time…. This one is a slippery slope however. If you discover that the leak is actually coming from behind the timing gear plate then mission creep...
