So 53 weeks ago my new to me FJ40 decided it was done. The motor siezed up and left my wife stranded. So over the next few months I had the motor rebuilt and the LC generally reconditioned since I had great access to everything. One day I'll get around to posting some pictures, but for now I have other things on my mind. Today on I-35 my new motor decided yet once again, it was done.

Yep, kaput, finito, toast, zilch, nada, hasta la vista. And a few I shouldn't spell.

I seem to remember getting more than 500 miles out of a rebuild in my previous projects. And to think I just changed my sig a couple nights ago to reflect it's new status.

Dunno

Hard to tell anything with all the wailing and tears going on. My :princess: was a little upset too. I failed to point out, she was the one driving again.

Just before it happened the temps and oil pressure where decent. Then she said it felt like she got a flat tire because of the noise and the way it was shaking. So she pulled over, and when no flat was found she called me. I've talked to the machine shop and he said to bring it in. So here we go again. First I have to pull it. Should go much faster the second time around.

One question I have. I know he line bored it last time. I vaguely recall reading where it's critical to have it mostly assembeled and torqued when doing that. Is that unique to these motors, or shouldn't that be done with any motor. He's not necessarily familiar with the 2F and if it has some quirks that would require something outside of the norm.

if it was running fine then died i would guess a rod cap came loose or dropped a valve or oil pump failed ...

Oh, drink a beer. Maybe two.

I have a 1f motor in my garage that I will let you have on the cheap if you want to go back a little on hp.

I know your stressed right now.. Take Kelly's advice, relax and tackle one thing at a time. I might suggest you do a clutch on that other rig first and get it off the plate. See about diagnostics on the dead 2f afterwards. That will go a long way towards a feeling of accomplishment and boost your energy.

My thoughts on 2f death related situation on new builds are cam bearing installation, or oil pump related. possibly rocker arm installation related or head gasket installation related. I along with others can provide more input if you want. SOmewhere I have a diagram of the oil passage thru the system.

It'll all work out..

I know your stressed right now..

Yep, it's been a rough week. And to top it off I threw my back out Saturday so I'm walking around like an 80 year old man. Small steps and real slow. It just takes a couple days sometimes to let the anxiety go, and then it's all about where do we go from here. It helps to have the encouraging words from folks on MUD. Thanks.

My sister and her 40 are in Dallas, so it's not practical that I'll be able to do that clutch. We've found some MUD members down there that may be able to help out. I will be trying to pull my motor over this weekend or next, depending how my back feels. I'm crossing my fingers that the machine shop finds something obvious.

I can help with recommendations for shops in dallas if you need.

If you can get the one that needs a clutch to Baker tire in Bonham Tx that would be my recommendation. approx 70 miles. Ask for Butch Baker tell him Erik in KC sent ya..

If he's not able to do it then Ask Butch whom in Dallas he would recommend. I totally trust his judgement and recommendations. Austin is too far or i'd have you go to Edwin.

Thanks Erik. I had contacted Butch earlier in the week and got a good bid from him to do the clutch.

She's still trying to decide exactly what she wants to do. She'll be in KC for Thanksgiving, so I'll entice her to get more mechanically inclined by doing a bit of wrenching on my 40 while she's here.

while that's a great way to spend thanksgiving.. I don't think that's what your wife and daughter will have in mine.. :)

If you need help getting it to Butch's place or wherever, let me know. I have a trailer if needed and I'm here in Dallas.

way to step up to the plate! We do miss ya..

Awesome. Thanks so much. I know she's going to try getting it up to Butch somehow. Just not sure how or when yet. She is up in KC right now for Thanksgiving. I mapquested his address and it's not as far as I thought. We think she may be able to baby it up there with a friend following to bring her back.

Anybody want to help pull a motor in Olathe over the next couple days? I tried to do it myself last night and couldn't get it done. I had a few ideas and am going to try again tonight. If I still can't get er done, I'm hoping to get a couple extra hands to help me out. My mom offered (seriously) but at 70 years old I think I'll let her sit this one out.

Any suggestions to make it easier for one person would also be appreciated. I've stripped most everything off, and it's just the motor, tranny and xfer remaining.

I've done this soo many times I hate to admit it..
Take the WHOLE front clip off.. Hood, fenders, front bib.. Then take the 3 bolts off the side of the bellhousing on each side.. Then take the two bolts out of the front motor mounts. It's a HEAVY beast and don't let it turn. You need to take the transfer case shifter off and the trans shifter out. Ebrake cable off handle in cab and minimal wiring. If possible roll the chassis back a touch to clear the pan, then slowly lift transfer over front part of frame. Set down carefully then split the assembly apart.

Thanks Erik. I've done all but removing the mounts from the bell housing. That's what came to me this morning. I'm planning to lift the tranny slightly to remove those, and then hopefully it will come out gracefully.
