Figured i would post this in the hardcore section since i am assuming this is where the majority of the comp-cut/stretched rigs are...

I am trying to get an idea of what i want to aim for wheelbase wise. I am trying to keep from having too short of a driveshaft (SBC 400/GM NV4500/AtlasII or 203-205 Doubler, i havent decided on that part yet) but dont want the truck to be super stupid long either. I was thinking around 110" but that would be stretching each end 10"!! I think that might be a little excessive. I'm looking to have a 90 degree approach/departure angle.

If you could...

Post a profile shot of your FJ40 and tell us how far you stretched each end.

100" on 39's....rear is not quite 90, front is about 80....SOA front and linked rear...for me, it's a good overall compromise wheelbase, short enuf for boulder crawling and long enuf for most death climbs...

no profile shots handy tho....

the 4500 is long, the doubler only makes that worse....my 700/D300 combo is relatively short and allows for a nearly 25" rear driveshaft

what size tires are you planning on running? i've got 114" on 39.5's, flipped rear fj60 springs in the front, 4 linked in the rear.....it climbs SO much better now, i have gotten high centered a couple of times, i think prolly 110-112 would have been a little more ideal for all around usage with 40's

104, 22" belly height on 39.5's

90* on both ends.

I live in Colorado and wheel the trails around here and Moab 99.9% of the time. I've had super short wheelbase rigs (stock wheelbase Sami's) and i've had a few Toyota trucks/4runners around the 100" mark, both had their pros and cons, i'm just curious as to what you guys are using and liking, and i have never run a tire larger than a 37 on anything.

I am aiming at running 42's and hoping for a belly height no more than 25" and would prefer to be a few inches below that if possible. And like i said, 4link/coilovers on both ends.

Mookie/Eskimo/Mace: Put some profile pics up if you could, would like to see the differences in the wheelbases you are each running.

here's one of my friend's on 42's with 118"

Thanks guys.

Mookie: I'll have to wait until i'm at home to see them, work filter sucks.

Mace: How far did you move your front axle forward, 10-12"? You stetched it a total of 14" and the rear looks like it might have moved a few inches?

Rear's been moved back quite a bit.

Front only by 3 or 4 inches IIRC

Really?!? Just by looking i was guessing the complete opposite!

Isotel: Thanks for the pic and i do agree, over 110" may be too much, that would for sure be my limit if the drivetrain wouldnt dictate more. Thats what i'm trying to figure out right now.

what's the best wheelbase for 37' or 38's

so what would be the right wheelbase for 37's? or may be 38's or even 39's?

I am in the process of putting a 14 bolt on my 40 w/ Ford f100 springs.

installing them with the short side to the front will give me 94" of wheelbase.

if I flip the springs I can get 3in more and be at near 97 1/2 in. The axel would be some how centered w/ the fender gap opening. As it is, we moved the hangers back and flipped 'em too.

I took this picture and not the best one since Javier is on the way but this is more less how it looks. we also put a drive shaft as a dummy to figure out more less an angle. i have not measured yet my Dshaft yet.

Let's see.. all leaf sprung, 101" on 38.5's, ~22" belly height..

I don't really have any side shots where one or both wheels aren't turned, making it look odd, but there's plenty of pics here: Tellico 10-07

Mine is 105", and soon to be 116", and a soft top pickup.
