I am about to push play on ordering wheels from MRW wheels. they are quite cheap and they can make anything you want almoust. but if you know of a better supplier/deal please let me know. :)

im going to run 40x13.5-17" wheels on my HDJ80. minimum lift, 3-5".. cutting place for tires as i always do, lot of bodywork but you still have a decent ride and lots of flex... we dont lift 4x4s here, we just widen them :bounce2:

any of you guys have any suggestions regarding offset on these wheels before i order them? i am set for 17x12" and offset -84mm/3,46" but open for thoughts..

but would love to hear your input.

No input here but I'd love to see pictures when it's done!

Will post pics for sure.. :)

Wondering what you are thinking of for tires?

Seems that folks in your neck of the woods, usually go with a rather modest AT tread rather than an aggresive MT or bogger/swamper tread.

Didn't look like the Dick Cepek Fun Country was still available in the bigger sizes

Why 17x12's?

Interested in seeing pics. MRW is located about 20min from me, but I've never been to their shop. They do make quality wheels, though.

Those still seem like aggressive treads. These wide rigs built for snow, often use a AT tread

I am finding it to be difficult to find bigger ( 38" 40" 44") tires, that are not mud rippers. I just need an all-season or AT tread, but a wide 40" tire

AT is a no go! I AT thread is rather unusual in these dimensions for us over here, especially for us that uses the cars for snow and mud.. But I have ordered 40-13.5/17 Yokohama geolandar MT. Was going for the Goodyear Mtr kevlar tires first, but it was such a big difference in prices that I thought I would give the geolandars a try..

Off, that's to high even for 44". In Iceland everything above 38" tires means moving the rear axle backwards, mostly so you do not have to cut so much in the doors..

I am a strong believer to minimum lift, so we can keep center of gravity lowest possible, and keep the driveline geometry as close to original as possible. I use my vehicles every day.. So the ride must be good. :)

Really looking forward to seeing this all done. Can you do a build thread so we can all follow along and see what is done to the 80 series to make it Arctic ready?

ofcourse.. :) will do one when the tires and flares arrive.

rbuljo, So are you going to relocate your rear axel to fit your 40's ?

Also, looks like yoko has a 40 x 15.5 if you go up to a 20" wheel. If you are going for wide, what was your thinking of 40 x 13.5 x 17 vs 40 x 15.5 x 20 .

( sorry for all the detail questions, been thinking of doing a similar project here in Alaska)

Aktundra, it depends alot on the fenders. talked alot with the guys on iceland regarding this. but 40" aint been done before up there. it is mostly 38"s and 44"+ thats the major deal up there. nothing in between.

i know on 38x15.5/15" is very close to the backdoor when flexed maximum in.

so basicly they have 2 sets of flares, -38" and 44" flares. but i feel that the 44" flares are quite enourmus when they cover a 44x16.5/15" tire with a 16x15" wheel.. :)

38" flares:

44"flares:

so i am still in discussion regaring flares.. if it falls on the 44" flares i have to move the rear axle approx 6" backwards to get it centered in the wheel arch..

but if it falls on 38" flares i wont have to move the rear axle.. but then again, maybe i will rub against the back door..

i got a 42-13.5-17" on a 14x15" wheel with -84mm offset i will have as a template and check if it will clear.. if a 42" is questionable, then 40" will for sure go clear. :)

ps check this site for a little pics and drooling.. it is a used car sale website for iceland.. upper right corner you can change language to english.

Very interest if you decide to relocate the rear axle. YOU MUST POST PICTURES !!!

It is my understanding the max relocate is 10-13 cm, before you conflict with the filler neck. I suppose the fiberglass shop supplying the flares may be able to tell what assumption they used in the flare fitment.

Filler neck is a trivial problem. :) pics will come.

The other question regarding tire choices are easy, always go with the smallest wheel size, we drive proper 4X4s.. Not hummers with 20"+ rims..

About time somebody built a proper 4x4 on this forum !!!!
