Correct, the "powerpack" (three coils) system.
The power increase was in 98...
Since 1998 the 1FZ-FE petrol engine has 7KW more power and 14Nm more
torque.
Now, the 4477cc engine delivers 165kW of power at 4600rpm and 387Nm
of torque at 3600rpm, with 312Nm available at just 800rpm.
Toyota's 1FZ-FE engine was redesigned throughout for the introduction
of LandCruiser 100 Series.
Power and torque were improved by adopting longer intake runners, new
short-skirt pistons with higher piston rings to reduce dead air
volume, an all-stainless steel exhaust system with fabricated headers
and new engine electronics.
A revised cylinder head provides enlarged inlet ports and a revised
combustion chamber design with increased squish area and larger valve
seats.
Fuel system improvements include the adoption of full sequential
injection with four-hole injectors and a hot-wire type air-flow meter
for greater mixture accuracy.
The improved engine adopts direct ignition with three igniters and
multiplex diagnostics.
Direct ignition improves reliability and emissions, and reduces
service time.
NVH countermeasures include a redesigned cylinder block, with
additional strengthening ribs, and reduced reciprocating mass
achieved by adopting lightweight pistons.
Emission levels have been reduced compared with the 92 to 97 1-FZ-FE.

Is this something that could be ordered somewhere in the US?
Hmm.. powerpack three coil system (distributor system) like these one below?

They added Variable Valve Timing VVTi for some 1FZs just a few years ago, so that might be the change for 2003. I think the Middle Eastern models. Not sure about the South American versions.
That's an interesting setup with the 3 coilpacks and the distributor... Guessing the distributor cap/rotor live a long and happy life being that it handles the low voltage switching to fire off the coils?
The pics I have seen of the OEM distributorless coilpack ignition had the packs mounted up front where the distributor goes. If it could be a bolt-in replacement without too much effort for the early US distributor 1FZ-FE's I would be game... But would prefer to use direct coil mounted spark plug boots if I was going that far, 6 direct fire coils mounted to their individual plug with just a signal/power wire and a ECU or board to drive them... $$$$.

So now its 6 years later any update on a 03+ 1FE crate engine?

With all those changes, it sounds like a 2FZ-FE.
I wonder how much those stainless heads help HP on their own and would they fit installed in an 80?
And of course, how much that would cost.
With the recent threads on exhaust frustrations, it wouldn't hurt to have what sounds like it would effectively be a permanent fix for some of these issues.

this thread makes me wonder if this more powerful 1fz-fe's parts are interchangable with a 97. go knows i wish i had a cummins in mine but until then if i find one of these in a scrapyard what parts to pull to help mine put out more power without a fullout tear down and rebuild of my 1fz-fe. just a thought
they ran the 80 with until 06 in other countries I'd love to know the spec's on a 06 motor
This engine was quite used in Venezuela till 2009. They have a land cruiser called in the local market "machito" that used this engine till 2009. I am bringing my lx 450 from the US to Venezuela, surely I would be looking forward for this engine upgrade.
