OK I just put HID's in my Hella H4's and WOW they're bright... But the high beam light on the dash doesn't work anyone know how to fix that?

No ideas ? Well a FYI it took less then 1hr to install and was a better upgrade then my PIAA offroad lights. I'll work on the pics tonight... Still the best $150 I've spent

I did a headlight upgrade on my fj62 with a new loom and relays and Osram Nightbreaker bulbs ( huge difference ) . The highbeam light on the dash also appeared to be dead. On closer inspection I found it to be on but so low that it is hardly noticable .
I learned to live with it .

Did you also upgrade the headlight wiring harness, or just the lights?

Nope wired it to the stock harness but the ballasts wire to the battery. My volt gauge doesn't even move when I turn the lights on and with PIAA head light it dropped A volt or 2 when I turned them one. I also used 50 watt ballasts

What brand did you use, and what color temp? I've been wanting to get a pair of HID bulbs for my H4 housings for a while. Maybe even some HID H1s for the high beams as well :D

6000K is what I'm wanting to go for once I figure out a HID solution. Do you have HI/LOW with the HID H4s or are they strictly low beam now? I know the local car stereo/lighting shop near my folks sold Halo brand HID conversion bulbs that were made for H4 housings, and liked their quality. Unfortunately Halo went belly-up a few months ago.

Also, why the larger ballasts?

The Hi Beam dash indicator is turned on by +12V at the red/green wire of the three prong headlight connector. Toyota uses switched ground for the headlights. So when the Lo Beams are on, the red/green wire at the three pin headlamp connection is pulled to ground. When Hi Beams are on, the red/green wire goes to +12V which turns off the Lo Beam filaments and also turns on the Dash Hi Beam indicator. So check to see if your wiring still exhibits this behavior. If not, you will need to modify the wiring.

sweet thats great info I will co that tonight

i did the HID swap into my civic, cost me $50 shipped to my house ballast bulbs ect all plug and play (looking back i would have bought better kit as the ballast kinda suck) but it was an amazing upgrade and i loved it. and i thought my light were already pretty good nothing compares to HID's.

on the indicator not working i cant help much there as my car runs a seperate hi beam bulb so my indicator still works just fine.

LOL - i've been waiting to do my writeup, but project stalled...

I upgraded my new bike's headlights (just low beams) with 55w ballast and 3k color temp bulbs. A W E S O M E!

I also bought a kit for the cruiser, and 2 sets of bulbs - 6k and 8k color temps. I got the kit specifically meant for the hi/low h4. It has a motorized movement that changes the angle (but doesn't have second "filament" or equiv) for high beams.

I will get it installed when i'm buttoning up the truck ( a long ways off now unfortunately).

I used DDM Tuning's kits for both bike/truck. They have lifetime warranty, and some CHEAP kits as options. There was a sale recently which had a dual low only kit (no high beam motor/kit) for like $40 or so!

Anyway - i'd love to see pics of your setup Kling-On!!! I was curious if the high beam light would work on the dash, but also figured if it doesn't - that's ok too.

GL!

Mine also has a motor/relay for hi/low using the same HID you can even hear it click

Well the HID kit only uses one light plug so I put a bulb in the other and my light came on the dash ...so I need to make a plug thingy to make it think there's a Bulb in it. Also have pics but can't up load from my phone so they'll be later

For those reading this thread looking to do HID's in their truck, Here's where I get my stuff from.

I have these kits in my Gti, my Bike, my GF's car, my parents car. Great quality and you can't argue the prices! (I am NOT affiliated with them. I am trying to help fellow Mudders get good quality HID's for a great price)
