Since installing jump seats in to my 40, I found myself running out of space packing for weekend camping trips with the :princess:. I never imagined the seats would take up as much cargo space as they do on the wheel wells, but wanted to be able to carry more than just two bodies if I needed to....

I decided an additional rack would be nice, but running topless, or a bikini in the summer left me with few options for the rack. I created a rack that would mount to the factory roll bar with U bolts, and allow for some needed additional space for our gear.

Measurements of useable space are 2 X 4 feet, big enough I can put coolers on there if necessary, and a lot of room for camping gear. I made the frame out of 1 1/2 inch square tube 16th wall, as it is plenty stout, except the mount tube which is 8th wall to fit the mount tube tight (it's 1 1/4 tube). Expanded as my base to keep stuff from falling through, and built a rail all around to keep stuff in, and something for tie downs to attach any where around the rack.

Since the roll bar isn't square, and for ease of install, I built the mounts as adjustable with bolts to hold the rack in place after set-up. Additionally, if anyone else was to use it, it could be adjusted to fit any width rack. Being 4 foot wide, I kept the inserts long enough to support weight if really extended.

ANYWAY...on to pictures, hope this helps anyone else looking for some more storage / cargo space...

I also added legs for the rack, which double as a table for the camp. Used a 1/2 inch black pipe, and welded the nipples at corners to support the legs. Kept the height of the table at 31 inches to give a good height for the camp stove, and built another rack within the rack to hold the legs on board, in essence giving me a second camp table with out taking more space...

Whoa. That is an AWESOME setup.

Nice job ! I've thought of making something like that, you took it further and actually DID !! Love the dual purpose !

The legs are only 28" long, so there isn't too much wobble. If I had to do this again, I would have angled the legs out a bit for stability...but I used the two walls of the rack frame to align the legs (too lazy to get everything equal). Still, since the table only supports the cook stove, and a little extra food prep-containers, it is plenty strong and stable for it's intended purpose. I wouldn't sit on it as a table, but will support the weight as a cargo rack...

That is awesome work!Lay some tin foil down and a grill atop and have a luau

Awesome execution of an idea. I have been contemplating the the same thing for a while now. Me mostly for camping with the dogs and hunting season. I intend to build one that will work with the top on as well, so there will be two levels of storage for gear & game.

Holy Thread Revival!!

It's been almost a year...but with the wild fires in Colorado, and the firebans placed, I really didn't want to camp until the bans were lifted...

ANYWAY...Finally got some "action" shots of the rack after it was turned to a cook table. the :princess: says its sturdy and nice to use.

After some practical application, looks like the rack / table gets two thumbs up!!
