so I guess there's something to these transfer cases cracking. It was nothing drastic - just put it in 4LO and drove on flat grass - CRACK! Brutal. So I'm now in the market for a new(er) t-case....

T-Case saver would have saved 'ya. Yep, one of the weak points in the LC...

I have a bare case...just the shell from a 9/77 FJ...holler if you want to barter..

Cheers

I hate when that happens.

That must be some mean grass you got there.

I still split my 3 speed case with a xfr case saver. The saver did keep the 2 pieces from falling to the ground though. I've put the 3 speed gears in an empty Orion case so I hope I'm good to go.

NOt your typical failure. It looks like the type where a nut backs off and falls down and gets wedged between the gears and the case. If so, it might be weldable, but a good used case is probably cheaper unless you can TIG weld.

i've heard the same thing... or a tooth from a gear breaks off, and get picked up and since there's really no where for it to go, the gears push out on the T-case causin it to crack...

Found it on eBay for about $25 but shipping was ~$55. The Orion case is made for a larger idler shaft so I had bushings made to fit the 3 speed shaft.

Looks like nasty gear oil with water contamination...

Really?

Please elaborate on how a ‘case saver’ could have possibly prevented an internal puncture wound on the bottom of a Land Cruiser one-piece transfer case.

I tend to agree with PinHead and Poser that this looks like something punched it out from inside. I'll be sure to post pics when I tear it down. In the interest of money and time, I am looking to buy a used transfer in good condition and make the swap. I'm not comfortable welding something like that, and I can't afford an Orion, but I'm all ears if there are other suggestions.

I thought I was lookng at it wrong. Never seen one crack on the bottom from stress. I've got him covered on my old case if we can work out a deal. Checking on the shipping tomorrow. Give me a call tomorrow on the cell# I sent ya fj.

IIRC, the hendog has an extra t-case in his basement he's not using. He's in Atlanta. Not sure how close that is to you.

If that's a 74/75 case, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the two bolts inside the case that holds it to the trans turned out to ba the culprit.

Culprit

Here's the culprit - the idler shaft worked its way out of the housing because the retaining key was not installed correctly (PO, not me!). The retaining bolt was tight, so it doesn't look like the retaining key swiveled out of position due to the bolt working itself loose.

Judging by all the punch marks on the input shaft retaining nut, this thing was buggered with a few times before I got it.
Anyhow, thanks to Jeff for hooking me up with his old transfer case. The plan is to put new seals/gaskets on that and get back on the road.
