more resto pics (Only 2 New Pics)

Well A few more resto pics. Currently I'm at the bodywork phase. I mounted the tub epoxyed the cowl and mounted the two togther. I than proceeded to mount the hardtop, doors, fenders, hood and check fit. I then put in the seats, rollbar, and anything else that would require predrilling into the tub. After all was put together I had a beer and a toast ok more like three or four beer's and a little cry, then began the final disasembly for body work and paint. That was more painfull the cracking a knuckle when a rachet breaks. But needed. Now for body work.

If you paln on getting a aluminum tub go for it, but expect some serious time doing bodywork if you don't want to see the tig lines.

Morre to come as the days go by. Maybe some painting soon if the pollen here in NC would stop  :censor:

I forgot to add I have pictures of my rear bumper made out of a front bumper from JT's I then had it trimmed down and I shaped it. I then added 3/8 cold rolled spacers on the top and bottom I think it turned out well in conjunction with new spring hangers from cruiser solutions.

I did all this because I was having a hell of a time finding a stock rear frame channel in good shape. Anyway

Care to share any details on the "TUB" bodywork? What did you use to smooth (grits and method ie hand or power) and fill (Bondo)?
How many hours?
I still have a lot of work to get done first just intereseted in some pointers.

I'm not sure if I'm a shining example on bodywork, But right now I'm about 10-14hrs into it, I knocked the tig lines down with a angle grinder and a 120grt dewalt sanding disc, careful not to go to far, then I started using the londboard and 80grt 3m paper. I think you could go on and onwith the straighting but eventually have to say"it's a fj40, it's not meant to be perfect". just look at hardtop side rivet spots :grinpimp: Other than that I think it's completly do-able
I'm using evercoat I think is the name, great with no pinholes. I tried a alluminum impregnated bondo, that used a clear hardener and it was impossible tell if it was mixed properly, so back to the basics with a colored hardener. Just tedious. Some guy's have just painted their cruisers and not worried about the tig lines. I couldn't live with that, even if my body work is a little wavey

I forgot to add I won't be using the aluminum hump that comes from aqualu. I plan on using my original, it fits ten times better with a little hammer modification. I also bought fiberglass hood and rear half doors from SOR. Needless to say I was less than happy with the quality

looks great...i don't plan on the fiberglass parts, but i'm interested to know what you don't like about them.

The fit on the hood leaves a lot to be desired. It may very well be my cruiser but I guess I expected it to fit with out to much work, and It hugged really tight at the back of the hood were it rools over to the sides against the cowl. The rear doors aren't something I wouldn't use for mor than mudding. Just not as high quality as I expected. I will add that I know how hard it is to work with glass so maybe I'm just expecting to much, but for the money, I expected a little more. Not trying to knock sor Because I have got plenty of partss from them and never had a problem.

too bad gozzard isn't really into fiberglass parts anymore...i've seen their stuff and i was impressed...made me almost wish the top i had at the time was rotted so i could go all fiberglass.

looks like you been busy. how long have you been working on it? nice work

Gozzard Composites

I just had lunch with a friend today who recently received his Gozzard tub. Quality seems to be as good as before.

Yeah it's a 72! I still have the tub, it's not in that bad of shape just more work than I would be able to put into it. I isn't to to handy with da welda. I think it would come out looking worse. I have a 69 Mg Midget That 'm restoring also and I'll do the floorpans on it but thats the extent, no exterior stuff.
