why were you asking if that was the year, does it look butchered. Cause right now it is.

no i was wondering cause i have a '72 and i didnt have a stereo slot(that one looks stock on yours) and the steering column and also the locking gas door. are these things you put on?

Hi All:

Are you swapping-on an aluminum body tub? What was wrong with the factory tub you had - yeah, a little bit rough, but from the photos it looked largely O.K.!

What did you do with the old body tub?

Regards,

Alan

year and tub

cruzerman, According to theinfo plate it was produced in Nov of 72, which in my opinon would make it a 73, however all title history and what not points to a 72. I have been researching the age thing and I agree with you I just haven't figured it out yet. Do you know a site where I can have the vin broken down(decoded)

Alan
in regards to whats wrong with the tub, just basic rust in the rocker panels, and rear quarters. Also the joints on the inside of the vehicle where the wheel well meets the floor and all throughout the bed are begining to swell from rust, not gone yet but on the way. To me alluminum was the way to go for the quality job and time I want to get out of the vehicle in the future. The old tub is just sitting in front of my house.

ya that year thing was confusing me. i guess mine is an early '72

Wow, you ditched that tub & it doesn't look like it's in *that bad of shape. Still straight, gas tank pan isn't rotted, sills are okay, back fenders aren't bashed. Haven't seen the underside, maybe that's all rusted. Are you planning on trashing the old tub?

LC Hamma,

I can't lie. It was rusted in the normal spots the sills on both sides the rear qaurters and a few other spots. The bottom is fine. I know it's a crime but I really wanted to do the vehicle in a timely manner, due to my lifestyle. I'm gone from home about six months out of the year, and I already a a 69 MG and a 64 Healy that I'm working on this is a project for fun, I Didn't want to take two years trying to do all the bodywork. so I took the lazy way, allthough I'm very HAPPY WITH HOW IT'S GOING. I've toyed with keeping the tub and working on it at my own pace over the next couple of years and maybe throwing it on another frame.

Mike is still making glass cruiser parts. I am looking at getting some of the stamped bezels

too bad gozzard isn't really into fiberglass parts anymore...i've seen their stuff and i was impressed...made me almost wish the top i had at the time was rotted so i could go all fiberglass.

:bounce: allright a beatiful day towork on the cruiser,

I'll post up some more pics latter today, time to work some aluminum. anyone here skip the bodywork phase on a aluminum tub install and just paint? are you happy or what are the areas you would have spent some time on??

accomplished some more......bodywork, I must be the worlds worst because I think in the end it will be more than 40hours of body work, so much sanding  threw on 3 coats of epoxy primer, and will continue to get the weld lines out. I think either this week or next weekend I'll take the tub off and clean with aluminum cleaner and epoxy the whole tub We'll see ;p What a boring and slow thread, Guess thats my doing

just alittle work from today
Hopefully the epoxy sticks well to the alluminum I haven't had a problem yet
just two coats of durabek rolled on so far. I was impressed with how well it looked for it's ease of use. I sprayed my epoxy and then during it's cure time I layed the first coat of durabek. I'm hoping there will be some sort of chemical bond...

looks sweet with the durabak, got it on the outside of mine and love the durability of the product. Make sure you put some extra in the drivers area and the trans housing.

Next time I'll do the smooth durabak on the outside, it would save arm hair when walking by.

tig lines killen me

I've been home for a week and a half and time to leave again for 2months, this project will never be done. I've been trying to finish up the straighting of the tig lines. I want to get the painting done before springtime. Maybe before the new year? if yall are thinking of doing an alluminum tub, I say go for it but be prepared to do alot of sanding and grinding to all the tig lines on the exterior if you want a good looking body.

I've been thrilled with the fit however, and I suggest fitting the old transmission case, it's classicly round and fits way better than the case that comes with the tub, however I hear Aqualu is working that issue. I haven't had any problems with the epoxy and alluminum bond. I used PPG aluminum metal prep prior to painting the epoxy, and I'm using high build primer from PPG on top of that.

Hey, that coating looks AMAZING on the interrior of the tub!
I was debating whether or not to paint the interrior the same colour as the outside, but i think i like the "durabek" idea better. I am writing from Canada, and am wondering where a guy can buy that stuff? Is it expensive?

Thanks,
Andrew.

Andrew here's where I bought mine from https://www.durabakcompany.com/secure/order.htm
and I think the biggest thing is making sure you have a moisture barrier i.e. paint before you use it, also make it thick using at least three applications. I used it because for me it will be easy to just fix it as I have problems. So guy's have said they love it others said they don't I guess we'll have to make our own choice.

On my way!

Time to be home to mama soon......and my wife! I can't wait to get home and start working on the cruiser again. next post shall have some new pics. Headed to WY for the upcoming holidays and after that time to fire up the heaters and git r done. Hopefully come summer I'll be in uwharrie or up in the blue ridges. I know a lot of you like cruisen MOAB but if I don't see any sand for the next thirty years it won't hurt me one bit.

Here's a little update on what I've been doing.

I painted the Cowl with A final painting, also did the trannyhump and window frame. Things are coming together slowly. I'm using a single stage, I only had one area that ran, I was pretty happy considering this is the first time I've ever applied actual topcoat. Tommorow I plan on marrying the Aquqlu to the cowl and join them for the last time.

All the other parts are prepped for the most part, I need to finish with the hood considering the PO took the short route and filled the dents in, instead of beadting it out as much as possible.

I think I spend more time entertaining people that see the cruiser all torn apart and stop by. I've had about a dozen peole literally turn around and come back to checl it out. I didn't know how popular they are. Deffinetly can see the reason they get stolen.

One more pic! One of the pics looks orange, I don't know why! I was happy with the painting, I have a couple of sopts that I've had to touchup with a brush, where I scratched it moving it. But overall for a first time paint, it was fairly straight forward.
