The other day I removed my gear lever on my 1977 FJ40. I had installed the 8 inch tuffy console, and the shifter was hitting the console in second gear. So I wanted to use a BFH to bend it up a little so it won't hit the tuffy console.

I decided that while I was removing the shifter, I might as well replace any parts I could, and to my surprise I found the retaining cap all hacked up, and the dowel pins where worn.

Being new to the FJ40, and not having a FSM handy - I had no clue how the retaining cap came off. After searching and asking a few questions here I figured it out. Because I could not find any pictures on ih8mud regarding this, I decided to post this tread.

I went ahead and bought the kit from SOR (part #062-99-FIX) and the rest of the items from the dealer.

I would say it did made a difference, shifting seems tighter, but I never expected it to be a race car after this mod.

It's a .5:banana: job, I just drilled out the dowels, and tapped them out with a hammer.

I have two tips:
1. Cut a small piece of rubber in a circle so you don't drop any parts into the tranny
2. Use the old rubber glove on a wrench trick when you push down, and turn on the retainer ring.

Not sure why you added a second bend. I took a torch and heated the factory bend until it started to turn red and it was then very easy to change the bend angle. I then quenched it in motor oil.

I was lazy, had a BFH and no torch handy.:lol::lol:

Once I put back on my SOR shifter pad, the bend is hardly noticeable.

Nice clean fix. I took mine to local tire/muffler shop. He charged 5-6 bucks to do that.

Another tip is to have the tranny in neutral when you remove the shifter. That way, there is no ambiguity about how it goes back in again. It is amazing how many people get tripped up by this and find out that they "can't shift the transmission" after reinstalling the shifter.

Great post MMW68. That is what I love about this forum. I have not torn mine apart and I don't think I need to, but since I read this thread, I now have a little knowledge in my brain about that particular part for future reference. Good idea  about the little circle of rubber also.

interesting dash

That dash is interesting--What's the funny shaped gauge on the right of the wheel --clinometer?

I like that!! I will be ordering one of those today if I have that same spot available on my dash that you have. Like Hillary Clinton..." I can't recall right now".
