Anyone ever had a time belt break?

Is it usually not the belt that breaks, but failure of the water pump, tensioners, rollers, etc. that touch the belt?

I haven't ever read of a reported failure on a hundy in the years that I've been lurking here, although that is the concern.

Toyota originally stated 6 years or 120k for the TB but since the WP starts to weep around the 90k mark they decided to move the TB to that interval too.

YMMV - literally.

147k when I replaced mine in 2009 (99 lx). It looked quite worn, and the sides were a bit frayed, but I think it had some time in it yet before it were to actually snap. Did the WP as it was weeping at the time, but just barely. Replaced with all factory oem Toyota parts.

I have only found one broken belt in my searches and it was new

Normally its the opposite.... 90k for the TB and the WP starts leaking at around 120K:confused:

I've seen one at the dealership, and a friend of mine had one break. Neither of them bent any valves, though.

Got a LC buddy down the street who doesn't use Mud but has 200k on his original timing, water pump, etc. Bought it new as a 2000. He's done nothing but oil changes since.

There's a guy on lcool that had a timing belt break.

IIRC, mine at 90K looked very good

This is probably closer to the norm than all the OCD PM folks here would care to admit.

Typos sent from my HTC EVO using the IH8MUD app...

this makes me wonder if the crew (including myself) who did it on time, did it too soon. What is the real life of the 90k service/ Should it be stretched or be done as scheduled. From what i am reading, it seems it can be pushed for years, although i wouldn't.

Stretching the 90k PM in/around Phoenix, for example, probably isn't prudent...due to the extreme heat effect on rubber anything.

yep, we'll take it while we can get it. It won't last forever. It has been unusally cold here the last few weeks.

Back on topic. I rolled over 180K this week. T-belt and water pump were done by PO at 100K. I'll wait another 25K or so before doing them both again. There is absolutely no data the suggests histrionics about rigid adherence to the 90K schedule, in fact, quite a bit to the contrary, and I'd like to do them both at once. Plenty of 100's/470's cruising around the Phoenix area, too.

:meh:

My 100 was born and raised in the Phoenix area. Did our at [strike]127k[/strike]~130K, using the inspection guildlines of the FSM I could have put in back in if it wasn't for the mileage. I waited till [strike]127k[/strike]~130K because the research I found showed the WP failing around 120-125K. That is not to say you should wait ...YMMV:)
