I’ll try to keep this short.
I bought my first Cruiser in 1996 at the age of 16. I was looking for a 40, but this stock 1973 FJ55 was pretty cool. Ran awful, braked even worse, and was a complete blast; it did have one of these sprawled across the hood though:

(First thing I did when I got it home was remove it).
I got it running, it broke down, and continued like this with a 75psi-d F up until 2000 when I rolled my ‘74 40. From there I swapped in the 350 I suddenly had lying around along with the four speed from the 74 with the rebuilt stock 3 speed case. At this point I built a custom set of 16x6.5" rims from Chevy centers. From there I installed the axles from a ‘79 55 I had (including a rear no-slip), and then decided to rebuild my rockers from 2x4" 1/4 wall steel, POR15'd the front clip, and install some 70 series turn signals. With the idea of heading to Cruise Moab 2002 and then heading to Alaska, I built a roof rack from EMT, ordered a set of heavy Alcan 2.5" springs, and painted the whole thing olive drab. I built a new rear bumper, built a temporary front bumper, and installed Scout PS. A month before we were scheduled to leave I replaced the 350 as the one inside the truck decided to implode.
My buddy Jude and I loaded up the truck with everything we needed for a few months in everything from Utah to Alaska.

I got back from Alaska with dreams of diesels, overdrive, and portal axles. I’m not sure when, but somehow I ended up with Ranger OD. In the fall of 2002 I bought a set of Volvo portal axles, some 9.00R16 Michelin XLs, and started cutting. I sold the Alcans, prepped a set of stock springs, installed the OD, and in late 2003 went back to Moab for some wheeling.

Now defunct :frown: why? :frown:

I loved the portals. I loved the functionality, I loved the selectable lockers, I even loved the looks. I didn’t really like only going 60mph on the highway, but off road was great. Going from a top heavy full weighted skinny pig to a flexy wide beast made me feel like I was cheating- it was almost point and shoot for everything I wanted. It was at this point that I dented my front fender on Rattle Snake with Kurt and Andre, and I completely re-evaluated what I was doing. I didn’t really care about rock crawling any more. For me owning a Land Cruiser was about the journey there no matter how far away.

I know many would scoff at the dent, but the pig is pretty clean and I just didn't want to ruin it.

After driving Royal Rose’s diesel pig, I decided that was the way for me. I always hated the 350 in my Pig; even with an RV cam it just didn’t make the low end torque I wanted. So I took apart the pig and started looking for parts. Eventually I said forget it and bought Royal’s diesel 55. I’ve been really happy with it so far, but it’s not exactly what I want now days.

So for now the truck sits in my backyard, stripped of everything. It will someday get rebuilt into a long distance hauler that can comfortably take people out for weeks in the desert and then turn around tomake another Alaskan road trip. For now, it waits.

Fun while it lasted. Veedauwoo, Dec 2003
With the diesel towing it to it's current spot.
I love this truck.

Hopefully you'll get the spark to get it back the way you want it. Very interesting transitions in wants and needs of the pig throughout the years. It looks like it has served you well.

Vedauwoo Wyoming? What do you do/where do you go out there? You can pm me, I'd be interested in doing more exploring out in that area, and if there's though obstacles/trails/good winter runs that would be a fun trip! Great looking piggie, man I want one even more now!

I always loved your 55 with the portals and michelins...

Perfect timing with the 55 on this months calendar. :)
