Anyone want to join us for some exploration runs?

Mark (Bluetribal), Gene (KightOwl) and I are doing a day run this Sunday, April 15th. We're planning on running the Jasper/Grapevine Canyon Trial, which runs from Ranchita down to the Ocotillo area. From what I understand, Jasper Trail is supposed to be a little more rugged than the Grapevine Canyon Trial. The Jasper Trail heads off of Wilson Rd. in Ranchita.

Google Map.

Time permitting, we may do a run or two in Anza or Ocotillo.

OR; Try some of what Los Coyotes in Warner Springs has to offer. Although I couldn't find much info on this area, it looks like it might be a ton of fun. Info; although SD 4wheelers encountered snow and wet conditions on their run, their account gives an idea of the area.

Google Map.

Let's go!

I cant make it.. but totally hit up Los Coyotes. It's a blast. You have to pay to get on the reservation.. but it's well worth the money ($10? its been a while). I haven't been out there in years.. but the last time i was there my buddy rolled and totaled his rig... Interesting tidbit: You have to get yourself to the main gate. The tow truck company will not go on the reservation! We limped the rig miles before we met up at the gate.

Some oldschool pics of the last time i was there..

Yo Dave.
All these old time pics is wanting me to get back my old Cherokee from my mother! :D

Landcrusher - have fun. Im totally out for the near future until I get some stuff fixed.

Killer pictures!

I found more info for Los Coyotes. Can't really find anything recent. Might not even be open to wheelers anymore?

B-day gift eh? I've got some running boards . . .

Im sorry Landcrusher70.... looks like your about 6 years too late. I just asked a buddy of mine and yes, it's a sad time.... Los Coyotes is closed:(

You might be able to camp, but no wheeling anymore. Sorry dude.

That blows!

There is also the Palomar Mtn. Divide. It heads off towards Palomar from Warner Springs.

Yeah Mark, see what you can find.

Reid, I was checking my map yesterday and this morning and I think I might have come up with some decent trails? I think it might be pretty "cool" to stay up on Pinyon Ridge and not even drop into Borrego Valley.
Jasper Trail runs from mile marker 7 off of S-22 to Riding & Hiking Trail which is a dirt road that either takes you back to S-22 or onto Hwy 78. So to make the trail a little longer I thing we should start at Mile Marker 11 and take Old Cup Valley Road that crosses Jasper Trail, hang a left onto Jasper to Riding & Hiking Trail and take that all the way to 78. Then off of 78 there is a few washes that dead end like Pinyon Wash, Nolina Wash, & Mine Wash. All three of these are off of the right side of 78 past S-3. Or we could take Old Borrego Valley Rd that cuts down to Borrego Spring Rd and takes us into town (Borrego). I e-mailed you a PDF of my map.

Sounds good. We could even do "The Slot". It's close to the Pinyon Wash (kinda). On our way back last time (going up the S-22), we ran the Old Culp Valley Trail. That's how we 'discovered' the Jasper Trail. It was a fun trail. We could definitely start there (MM-11).

This picture below was taken at "The Slab".

Whatever we do will be a good time.

I'm making arrangements w/ Paul & Gene. Trying to nail down a meeting spot w/ them. Maybe the junction of the 76 and 79 (North of Santa Ysabel)?

i take it "the slot" is that point on pinyon where it gets very very tight. I've always wondered if a 80 series can make it through there.

That's the "Squeeze" on Pinyon Mtn. IIRC, The Slot is a Slot Canyon with a sandy hill descent along the way.

Yeah, so I guess we will pick-up where you left off last time. It will also probably be a little cooler up there rather than down in the valley. But it might be more windy? Forecast is mostly sunny, 75 and wind.
Yep, essentially.

I saw that a Santa Ana was expected. Should be okay though.

Of course it could, with some damage. I just looked through pics on Monday of my co-workers Heep going through it and he had the passenger mirror folded in and fenders just rubbing the rock. Now an 80 can do it because if you put the drivers wheel up on a boulder it adds another foot of room. But that tilts you and puts your roof on the rock. So if you had a roof rack to drag across the rock you probably could get through without body or window damage. But add a boulder to the right side and I would say an 80 could get through no problem. Of course no mirrors to look back.

One of my books shows a picture of a Tundra that went through . . .

The picture was used as an example of 'body damage'.

I hope you’re not talking about Pinyon Mt. Rd Squeeze followed by the drop-off?
Been there done that. Don't want to do it again.
A 4Runner in front of me at that time hit the rocks with the side of the rig above the back seat window.

Pinyon Mountain Rd. is the trail that has the "Squeeze" & the "Dropoff". Not to be confused with Pinyon Wash or Diablo Dropoff. Different trails.

I have no interest in running Pinyon Mountain Rd.

Sunday may also be cloudy & windy.
