HZ engine date by serial number (1 Viewer)

Does anyone know how to date an HZ by the serial number? My serial is 0159617

Thought I'd chip in here with the engine S/N I have:

'90 HZJ80 engine S/N 0022436
'97 HZJ80 engine S/N 0034519 (pulled this engine out of a truck at the junkyard)
'14 HZJ79 engine S/N 0776390

So at least now you can narrow yours down to being post '97 and pre '14

I think the timing cover changed in 1999 from clips to bolts.

Mine has a December 95 build date and the number is 0174149 ,so there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to them.

It could very well be that the one I pulled out of the 97 HZJ80 was not the original engine on that truck? Could have been an older engine dropped into it?

I doubt they are running in a simple numerical order. More than likely the numbers represent times dates months and maybe the years are in the "years since our Lord Emperor's death".

Problem with the 1HZ is the number of different iterations of the engine as well as the fact that it was used in many other applications beyond merely just the Land Cruiser... Coaster trucks, marine applications, industrial applications off the top of my head.

This was the same problem with dating 1FZ-FE engines based on serial number as well since that engine was used in many different venues.
