Has anyone bought a new Toyota steering wheel?

Is there anyone out there who has bought a new Toyota leather covered steering wheel who can give feedback on how it holds up? Debating on new versus having my old wheel recovered, the prices for either route are fairly close.

I had mine recovered, I was very happy with the results. You can have them add padding and that kind of thing at the same time if you wanted to make any changes.

I thought there was a huge price difference. If I remember right the OEM wheel was no longer produced and was carrying a price of around $1500. Recovered were only around $350 with core.

Edit - $1000 for new OEM from CruiserParts

I know Shane's are about $400 with the core sent back. There is another company in Texas that charges under $300 IIRC. And an individual in Florida who wants $460 to reglue the foam rubber and replace the leather using original style stitching (baseball stitch).

Edit: A new Toyota leather wheel is right around $400 with discount, so that is the dilemma, why buy recovered/rebuilt when you can buy new?? My original steering wheel deteriorated rather quickly, so wondering if the leather on a new Toyota part has been improved in the last 15-20 years ie: are they new production, better leather ??

Recently saw one of Shanes core exchange wheels and it looked great!

Only gray remains.....

List: $569.85

MUD: $427.39

This is not the center pad portion. Just the steering wheel itself.

It is a superceeded number. If you study the text you will see it goes to a non-leather wheel. So your 427 bucks gets a plain wheel.

I get suspicious when a thousand dollar steering wheel suddenly costs 400 bucks.

I figured something was up. Prices tend not to drop like that...if at all ;)

Well maybe not a bad choice, wouldn't have to worry about the leather falling apart. Anyone who's had their wheel recovered or replaced got feedback as to how it's holding up?

Cut your leather off and you have the plain wheel underneath.

I bought what I believe to be the last new tan wheel years ago to match the leather to. I've had people want to send it back as they think its the incorrect color. Remove your airbag and you'll see the untouched leather that wraps each spoke and its nothing like the wheel.

If you use hand sanitizer you'll destroy the leather quickly as it kills the natural oils.

My wheel has 3 years of hard use with no wear marks, however I use un scented lotion and a T-shirt to condition mine. It works very well.

Under the original leather I found a black ?foam rubber (doesn't feel quite as solid a rubber as the auto shifter handle for example), it's apparently glued or molded to the metal frame in the center. Has anyone sent a wheel to the company in Texas to be recovered, I forget their name?

CruiserParts still has one new tan for $1000

I'm thinking about going the Leatherique route: sand the leather, dye it black and add a top coat sealer. I think the wheel would look better in black than grey anyhow.

Anyone here done this repair to a leather wheel?

Darkness: how long have you had the wheel, enough time to show any wear, does the dye come off when you clean it??

Like 6 months. Not long enough for significant wear. I've cleaned and treated it with leather conditioner. Dye did not come off. Looks much better than the worn through original leather.
