Damn, that is a big tent. Still think you needed the ++ basket/handrail? When you have guys hanging out up there do you have some of the mesh flooring?
I use the extended basket/handrail almost daily. Its perfect for setting the tent up. Its nice to have a grab handle all around the truck when putting the windows up on the tent and whatnot. And yes the mesh is strong. Its worth it IMO.

I need deets on this rig. Whose is it and where can I find build specs on it? This is what I want mine to be when it grows up!

Could you build that drop-down basket to be removable, similar to the sunroof cutout? That way you wouldn't need to decide whether to run the expo rack basket-up or basket-down at the time of manufacture. I like the basket but I hate the commitment.

Alternately (or in addition), could you make the sunroof grid a drop-down basket instead? Personally I wouldn't want to have a basket up there most of the time, but if I needed the extra space to carry anything (jerry cans, luggage, etc) with an RTT already up there the drop down basket seems like it would secure the load a little better.

Sure, that would be an option most likely. Probably more realistic to do on the sunroof than the larger area we're using for the big basket, but certainly within the realm of possibility.

I have a sunroof cutout on mine and sometimes find the need for the extra cross bar(s) that isn't there. I can probably figure out a way
to have one I can mount and dismount when needed. Besides that, I'm really glad I opted for that because I keep my roof open most of the time. I also agree that 6 mounts are plenty.

So sounds like you'd be in favor of the new removable sunroof section? Would that take care of the issue you run into?

I went full expo +++
6-mounts, didn't see a need to 8.
rear 1/4 mesh, should have gone 1/2
gussets in each corner, these are amazing as tie down points
std 4 light tabs, was plenty for my needs
drop down for LED bar
39" LED bar, friggen bright!
quick install fairing
powder coated
(2) rear LED lights
Awning mounts
What is the lowest profile roof rack option?
So you wish you'd added more mesh. Do you think if you were getting one now you might opt for the new drop down basket for the middle with mesh in the rear or just mesh in both those sections?

Also trying to take future cargo box into consideration. That looks like the Yakima 12 on your rig. You find that to be a good mix of space up there?

@Bigherm22

Correct, I wish I would have gone at least 1/2 mesh. I like the idea of the drop down mesh basket, but i don't think I would have opted for it today.....but the removal sunroof would have been an option for sure. I might work with Tim to see how I can add it to my existing rack today with minimal fab on the rack.

Its a Yakima Space Saver cargo box, comes in very very handy all the time (camping, fishing, skiiing)...but if I add an RTT, it goes away while its up top.

Thanks everyone. Simple stuff, but it helps to hear from others rather than doing this in a vacuum. Think I'm placing my order tomorrow. And you guys are right, I don't think I could really screw it up no matter what.

OK, new question: fairing.
Tim has asked me if I want the fairing with clamps or snap-on. Anybody have thoughts on this?

Get the snap on one and trade me for my clamp one lol.

snap-on if you're going to put a light bar behind it and need to remove it to run the lights; clamp-on if the fairing will go up there and never come off.

It's ordered! Thanks for all your input everyone. I wish I were as handy as the rest of you so I could make mods as I go. But I'm a clumsy jackass so I really need to think ahead.

Anyhow, ended up mostly how I started, but decided to try the new drop down basket in the middle, keeping regular grid in the rear. Figured that way I could still get the benefits of running it upside down and get back some of the basket functionality.

Also added some lights on the front and rear. Like I said, I've never had extra lights on a rig, but decided to just get it done now rather than hem and haw and regret later.

It's a few weeks out but might have it ready to roll by the Memorial Day kickoff to the summer. Thanks again!

Congrats! I'm just waiting on a final quote from Tim myself. I'm guessing from all the feedback he's perpetually swamped with orders

Yeah, I can only imagine for how much time Tim has spent with me how much time he must spend altogether on this. For anyone that stumbles onto this thread in the future trying to figure out rack options, it's pretty impressive.

Oh yeah and we also developed a cover for the sunroof cutout- this was a customer request, they wanted the open sky most of the time, but also wanted the option to load that space up with gear occasionally. So we put weld nuts on some more tabs, made a frame out of angle, more grid, I found some stainless thumb screws so it could be removed without tools. I'm not sure I love this one personally, was thinking of putting a hinge on it at one point, but then I may just leave it off most of the time, I dunno. I could see that 1 big trip though where I wanted to put chairs or something ahead of the RTT, and this would be ideal for that.

I noticed I can hear the wind running through the grid with the sunroof open, definitely more wind noise when it's installed than when it's missing. But with the sunroof closed all I hear is tires again, just like normal. Anyway, another option now.
