Don't forget about the Viagra thread

Let's re-open the HG survey and compare failure frequency (with our limited sample) between Canada and the northern US against the warmer south and west.

Sounds like an ax grinder IE no data just a gripe and advise to write down the service techs name? I'm sure you can find a pissed toyota owner with a warped head who didn't replace it and toasted the engine at 100k and they'd tell you they all do it.

If you had looked a little deeper you would see that is not just a single individual with "an axe to grind" but is a web site where attorneys specializing in this problem advertise their services. IE there are enough of these GM oval cylinder motors to make a market.

Piston slap is very common but don’t take my word for it, Go to any GM truck forum and search for “cold start knock” or “CSK” as it has been shortened to like this forums “PHH” and see how many threads there are about it.

On GM-trucks.com “piston slap” brings 11 pages of results, and that is the least used phrase. I think that is a little more than “one negligant pissed off owner”

Enjoy your Chevy

As much as I feel the Chevy V8's are 'OK' motors(they don't compare to a 1FZ in reliability), I wouldn't get on a Toyota site and try to convince one of the biggest believers in Toyota(Doug) to swap a Vortec in for his 1FZ which needs a headgasket. The idea seems rediculous.

I'm not trying to convince him I've been around Doug long enough to know that. I've also been around enough closed minded chevy haters to see that simply the word of the number one production engine of all time and the number one repower/swap motor of all time just pisses people off. Kinda like the Yankees. I hate the Yankees!! They are always winning and in peoples face and some people hate them for that. It would be hard for me to own a 1fz as I have four kids and tow a 26 ft camp trailer. I own a 3fe but have another tow vehicle for now. Can't imagine driving 300 miles at 45 mph. Thats my issue not Dougs. I need a powerplant that can do more than just haul the weight of itself and possibly a small 4 wheeler trailer. Doug tows a boat with his I know but turning those rpms with a tranny that has had issues (several posts) doesn't work for me. I want to cruise at 60 with my hunting and camping gear trailer in tow. The 1fz can't do that from what I've read. Plenty of advice not to tow weight long distances with this engine. So hate all you want. I don't even hate the 3fe like I said I need reliabilty AND power. By todays standards the 1fz would be a great engine for something half its weight but like Doug said for todays standardss its underpowered by comparison. I like putting the engine I think best suits the application in the application even if the factory failed to do that. The factory probably didn't expect to try to tow at highway speeds with the 1fz but thats what I need it to do. Then I can drop my trailer and use the suspension and drivetrain to get where I need to go with all my hunting buddies in tow. Anyway again good luck Doug thanks for actually seeing what I was trying to relate in my posts. Like I said I'm only questioning the head gasket, power, and fuel economy of the 1fz not the overall reliability. I'm not pissing in your cherios just saying what I'd do in Dougs position so don't get too riled if you don't want to do then don't. The point I'm making is with a SBC I can gain a sizeable power increase to meet MY needs and get as good if not better fuel economy at the same time. As for the Lawyers looking for lawsuits you can trust them all you want but they always seem to go after the biggest fish.

Sucks to be sick, sucks more to be sick and travelling or away from home. I hope they (and you?) get better quickly.

Doug's HG video just arrived. Tonight I'll sit by the fire, eggnog in hand and watch. I'm wondering - will this inspire me to do it or will this scare me off? I'll let you know.
