I’m getting contradicting info on the forums. I’m wrapping up my 2F swap, got everything running and I’m now on to installing my driveshafts. My truck is a ‘62, I installed a 2f+4 speed gearbox and tcase from what I believe to be a 79 40. Can I Frankenstein my driveshafts to work in this application or do I need some custom shaft work done? Thanks in advance.

The 4 sp is longer than a 3 sp, I think you will need to modify the drive lines. Might be as easy as swap them front to rear.

Seems like install the engine/tranny/transfer and measure. What about the flange pattern?

So are the drivelines 62 or 79?

I have both sets of drivelines. I have a front and rear set from a 62 and front and rear set from a 79. I read a couple different places that they could be frankensteined together.

I think the bolt patterns are different. I would guess the lengths are different too.
I not familiar with a 62, but you might be able to pull the driveshafts apart and swap the female ends if that helps. If you try this make sure the U joints stay in time. When i went from a 72 3 speed to a 76 4 speed i used the 76 drivshafts and they fit. I had to swap pinion flanges to accommodate the later model driveshaft bolt pattern.

If the splines on two sets match should be able to use the long section from the 79 and short yolk section from the 62. The flange pattern change during the 68 model and then again with the start of the four speed. Only reason I would see not to use 79 axles is the 3.70:1 ring and pinion.

Spline count is the same. I'll give this a shot. Thank you! To clarify, my axles are still the original 62 ones.

X2 on using pieces of both driveshafts to make this work, the slip yoke will be at the diff end but no biggie
make sure the driveshafts stay in phase.

Awesome thanks for the tip!

Unfortunately it seems no matter which way I swap the yokes around, no combination here works. Maybe it’s the year difference. May need to get custom shafts made or modify my existing ones. 62 shafts are on the right.

OK, lemme be sure I’m up to speed.

You are using 1962 front/rear axles?
You are using a 1979 H42/1pc Trans/T-Case?

If yes to both, you have two options:

Swap the front t-case output flange to a fine spline small pattern 64x56x8mm to match your 1962 shafts. Then remove, redrill and re-stud the park brake drum to match your existing 1962 drivelines. Have length(s) modified.

OR preferably

Use the later “4 speed” driveshafts with the 68.5x60x11mm pattern and simply buy a pair of these for your axles

Awesome Kurt thank you so much and yes correct to both of your questions. I will get these ordered today! Thank you!

Other items to consider:

(Your 1962 should be running this nut)

If you get the flanges for the axles to use the 79 drive shafts will the length work ? Thay appear very close to the 62 drive lines in length but a bit different, might not be an issue.
I believe so yes.
