Would you buy this 87?+PICS+

I would make VERY sure what gear ratios you have now, both front and rear, before buying another diff. Pull the rear one out now, see what's going on.

And don't pay more than $50 for an open 4-cyl diff with 4.10's.

Someone earlier said to lock 1 hub and turn the DS, I did that and it would not spin.

If that was the front?

Yeah it was binding and clunking pretty bad, but is sounded that way before I left the lot. It reminded me of a spooled rear, the binding was worse around corners.

Any one else thinking what I'm thinking?

Go get you some roll over 4r gears front and rear forget what you have.

Also check 4x4 mini auto tans.

G292 4:10
G254 4:56
**10 4:37
**14 4:87
**28 4:30

G is 8" diff
2,3 or 4 imply pinion's in the spider gear's
and the last two #'s are the ratio's

All that info above ^^^^^ only applies if the stock factory gears are still in the diffs. My VIN sticker says I have 4.10s right now, but I guarantee you that's not what's in the axles.

Rear diff has to come out anyway. Take it out, count the teeth.

I'm pretty sure its 4:10's. I hope to get time to work on it tomorrow. I'll take pic's and let you know.
I tried to check the front today but it didn't work out so well. I jacked up one side, marked the tire and the u-joint. I had the trans in N and the transfer case in 4hi. I turned the tire and as it turned it got hard to turn, I used two hands and the wheel started turning but the drive shaft didn't. Then I jacked up both wheels and tried it again, same thing.

I cleaned it out good, cleaned the windows, took off the front push/brush guard and 4 fog lights, fixed little stuff here and there. Its time to dig into the axle now. There were 2 steel wagon wheels with BFG's in the bed, it has a brand new sony explode cd head unit and an amp under the pass seat.

The kids like it and it fits in the garage(just clears the door).

I got the 3rd out of my truck.
I think someone changed the gears, Unless toyotas came with richmond gears.

The ring out of mine has 37 teeth.
The one I got has 41 teeth.

The busted one out of my truck on left.

By the thickness of that ring gear, I'd say you have 5.29's in there. And from the looks of things, they're no good now!

And I wouldn't put that other rusty POS diff in MY truck. Take that thing back, get your money back. UGH!!!

I just counted teeth again on the Richmond gears.
8 teeth on the pinion, 37 teeth on the ring.
I went to there site and none of those numbers matched with what they sell.

Well by the looks of the carrier unit it seems that the pinion gear is WAY to far in torward the diff and needs to have a new crush sleeve or solid spacer installed and probobly new bearings. If the teeth of both the ring and pinion gear look good you could probobly asemble a good diff with the parts you have there and a couple new parts from toyota.

Ken those numbers look to me more close to 4:88 or mayby even 4:30 gears and my yukon 4:88 ring gear was about as thick as the one pictured above.

Good luck gettin a working set tracker

Look at the chunks in the ring teeth, those gears are trash. The pinion probably looks worse. A few things could have caused this: bad setup, pinion nut coming loose, pinion bearings disentegrated. Something allowed the pinion to walk in too far, that's for sure.

I can't make the math work at all with 37 teeth on the ring to come out to 4.88s, can you?

37/10=3.70
37/9=4.111
37/8=4.625

But 37/7=5.286... Tracker are you SURE on the pinion teeth?

4.88's are usually 39x8 teeth.

Yup, I misscounted, its 37 ring & 7 pinion. 5.29's
I'm gonna call richmond tomorrow because the part number does not jive with anything they list. Here is what is stamped on the ring:
RICHMOND K 3 80-0402-1 8620

The pinion is trash, no teeth at all and the ring is missing a few.
Maybe they only changed the gears in the rear. I'm gonna put it together and try and check the front to see what's in there.
Worst case, I'll have to drive it in 2wd untill I can get some money for 5.29's if that's whats up front :frown:
