My 60 series was set up that way. Late head with domed pistons. I was under the impression that it decreased compression. Either way, Buster Brown was a mover and a shaker. I think it’s still an adventure vehicle (Rebangobuster on the IG). Had I not been emotionally forced to sell that rig, it would still be with me. Happily married for 26 years, ’nuff said.
@Pighead I believe the F Head is in decent shape and I have a few extra push rods for the occasion. The oiler is the copper pipe though. I thought that was a weak point vs the newer head. The rockers are still soaking in diesel and atf to see if they can be released. That F engine sat for many years with water intrusion near #5 & #6. I will check on them in a month.
I can’t thank you guys enough for offering up options. There is a lot of extremely valuable information that could easily be missed by a goober wrench monkey like me.
Short term goals: Treat/paint Frame, ‘78 axles on ‘73 springs, set engine after I determine if 4 speed can be rebuilt or just go with the 3 speed because it’s in one piece. Lack of better technical knowledge-the rear cone on the 4 speed transfer case is in pieces and can not be used. I will be looking through the parts stash I was granted from the Grey Bondo Queen soon enough. I hope a spare is in there.
Intended purpose is to drive around town, forest roads, and occasional Potts Mountain Trail near me in Virginia. Possible annual trip to Uwharrie in Troy, NC for the Carolina Relic Run. 3 speed is my preference but I know nothing about the gearing to determine which is best for my use. Interstate use is strongly discouraged by the devil on my shoulder-he prefers slow speed off camber roll over situations that will make me squeal like a pig.
