Just a PSA that GROM has some updates on the firmware specifically for wireless carplay. I've been using it for a few weeks since the update and it stays connected without freezing or disconnecting pretty reliably. Worth the update if you bought a GROM prior to the beatsonic being available on the 10-13's.

I should also mention that Beatsonic customer service is great. Eric responded to about 4 emails I sent him yesterday and today within several minutes!

Thanks. I have a love-hate relationship with my Grom unit. However, I never remember to update the firmware. Maybe because the last few times I have, it has made the "quirks" seem to be worse. I guess I'll update it today and see what happens.

I had a Grom in a Volvo and while it did allow me to have bluetooth, it was very "quirky" and my wife could never figure it out. I assume having a touchscreen will alleviate some of that but has kind of scared me more towards Beatsonic. I don't want to spend $600-700 on something that doesn't work consistently.

Well, I finally got it installed, disconnected battery and all. Wife is thrilled to have carplay, since it's her daily driver. Taking a road trip over the weekend so will see how well it performs and figure out the quirks. I found the following video from Eric the most helpful as it demonstrates how to install wire by wire, instead of disconnecting everything and reassembling. Found that to make for a pretty straight forward install.
What was your total install time, minus beer breaks, World Series, nachos, hot wings, etc.?
Any thing that tripped you up for those who follow in your foot steps?

I did the same but recently updated and seems to have different issues now than the ones it fixed. I think my unit is starting to die frankly.

I just went to their website and for an extra $13.99 you can get a video cable for what they say is "VAUX AV Cable for Backup and Front-facing Camera"?
Does the Grom allow you to add an additional front camera that wasn't factory? That would be very useful!

There's camera connections in the back I think.

Have you ever thought about adding an front camera?
All day everyday. I need to confirm if the video cable is connected to the back or to the wiring harness. I need and want a front camera.

Took my about 2 and half hrs, but much of that time was re-reviewing Eric's videos and playing with settings to confirm install. If I were to do it again, it would take only about an hour or less. Be careful to note which screws go where, as they are different and I stripped one of the mounting holes by inserting the wrong screw.
Also, be careful not to knock any of the DIN switches on install as they can be accidentally knocked when fitting the unit into place. DIN 1 should be the only one in the 'down' position on install, otherwise the unit wil not work.

Wow! That's far easier and quicker than I would have imagined! I would have expected it to be an all-weekender.
For those stripped threads, assuming the stripped threads are plastic, use a hot glue gun.

I'm in the same boat. I want to upgrade to the beatsonic, but I can't justify it when the GROM works 90% of the time lol. Even if I sell I'm still out more $$ it's just a whatever situation. The update for both firmware and software did work pretty well for me. I have issues primarily with the backup camera not populating on the screen. It's annoying as hell when I have to go from P->R->N->R just to back out of any spot. It's gotten better for me with these updates. I will say if your GROM is laggy or having lots of issues I would factory reset. Every android based computer or phone I have used has gotten to the point where it just starts overloading everything, drains the battery or doesn't work as well. I'd reset completely and completely disconnect from all power for a 24 hour period and allow all the particles to leave the system. I've had success with that strategy on my prior phones before I moved to Apple which has it's drawbacks, but at least I don't have as many privacy issues.

Are there any major (or even minor) differences between Beatsonic and Grom, aside that Grom is several hundred dollars less?

They are only $80 difference now. The main difference is the Beatsonic is reliable and the Grom seems to vary by user for reliability. But the Beatsonic is newer, so my 2013 wasn't available when I was in the market and it was the only option at the time.

So, I just updated everything that could be updated.....firmware, software, everything. Now the volume is much lower than it was prior to the update, it will connect to the Grom via bluetooth but not to carplay and if I connect it to Grom via bluetooth, the volume goes back to what it was. But as soon as I plug in the cable so it will connect to carplay, the volume drops. And before anyone asks, when the iPhone is connected via cable to carplay you cannot adjust the volume on the phone. I swear I'm gonna pull this thing out andf throw it in the f'ing trash. It's a damn good thing this isn't my daily..........

It did that to me too (whoops), you need to go into the carplay settings without your phone connected and readjust the volume settings. Might also need to change the volume in the overall settings. I should work for them at this rate

I just went back in and after rebooting it a couple more times it finally went back to the correct volume. However, it will not allow me to make the connection wirelessly to carplay. It pairs but it won't connect. I seem to recall having issues with the wireless carplay a while back but don't rerally care about it as I generally have my phone plugged in when I'm in my rig. I know NOTHING about Android crap, so I'm gonna follow your suggestion and disconnect everything and wait until tomorrow or Sun to reconnect it all and see if that doesn't help.

Mine with the updates takes a minute or so to actually connect sometimes. But I would completely unpair on GROM side and your phone for all bluetooth and so forth. Also need to make sure you have the small black antenna in the GROM for the wifi, if you don't have that it physically won't work. A hard reset might help regardless. Android is impossibly difficult for no reason.

Thx, but it was one of the metal tabs I stripped. The screw holds and I don't notice it once the trim was re-installed, so out of sight, out of mind.......
