So here's the quetion, will a e locked front third out of a fj80 fit in a rear third housing out of a 8 inch taco?? Also, did toyota ever make a 8 inch front that came under any other trucks but the fj80? A guy wants to know if he can gear the fj80 third to 5.71s, even though they don't sell a ring and pinion for the fj80 that goes up to 5.71s, i told him a kit for a taco 8 inch should work because they should have the same ring and pinion? Am i wrong here?

OK, here we go.

* First, no it won't bolt right in. The Taco is only an 8" diff if it's got an e-locker in it. Otherwise it's a little bigger, I think 8.4". Even if the rear axle originally had an e-locker in it, the bolt pattern is different for the front 80-series e-locker, it's pretty much a mirror image.

* Second, even if it did fit, this is a BAD idea. The front FZJ e-locker is hi-pinion, with reverse-cut gears. Putting it in the back will have the pinion running on the coast side of the gear teeth, which is a LOT weaker. The gears won't last. Several have tried it (including Marlin) all with the same results.

he told me he's putting it in his front axle. I told him it's an 8 inch. He wants it to match the gearing in his rear which is 5.71. Do they offer 5.71s for the 80 front?

Then is your question if the FJ80 front e-locker fits the front diff of a Taco? NO, can't put an 8" FJ into a 7.5" Taco. You can put an 8" FJ into an 8" 1979-85 front-end using our Manual Locker conversion (can't use cable locker conversion).
Additionally, I have second-hand info that 5'71's can not be used with the e-locker. Plus I'm still trying to figure out how rich one must be to use 5.71's (i.e. considering they seldom live past the end of the driveway).

Opinion of one of, it not the best in the industry...

571 gear strength

What year is this "Taco"? Just want to clarify, some people (including eBay) call every mini-truck a Tacoma, when in fact the Tacoma didn't arrive till mid'95.

But to further answer your question (hopefully), the 8" 80-series e-locker will not fit in the front of any IFS truck (unless it's been SAS'd), no way, no how.

I removed a set of busted 5.71's from a diff once, geez that pinion was TINY. I respect Zuk and his opinion, he's a smart dude, but there's no way I'd run them.

I think your question is, will a 571 ring and pinion gear set for a tacoma rear 8.4" fit in a front 80 series high pinion 8" carrier and third member. is that right?

Being the masochist that I am, I'll chime in....

I think you can make an elocked FJ80 fit in the rear of an 8" Tacoma but it won't be easy and it won't last very wrong so don't do it. KLF already explained that the front FJ80 (or FZJ80) gears are reverse cut so they would be weak driving forward if installed in the rear. Now if your friend plans on driving backwards most of the time then go for it!

To answer your second question, 1984 and 1985 4Runners have 8" front and rear diffs that are interchangable. Also IIRC, all straight front axle (non-IFS) mini trucks also have the same 8" front and rear diff (1979 through 1985).

Here is a great reference on Toyota diffs:
