Non-tech:

I just got over 14mpg on the highway with my 2F. It is possible. And I bet you would smile if you rode with me.

Tech for the third time:

What gearing are you running in your axles coolotisdog?

3.7 just got 37s it's cruising even better on the highway now

Okay. Thanks coolotisdog.

37's would be paired with 4.88 gears for a stock ratio. So you've got one heck of an overdrive. Be safe with it.

I really wonder though if Toyota would have had the ability to produce a decent v8 and had a decent automatic at the time would have anyone actually chose the 2f and 4spd over a v8 and h55 or overdrive automatic transmission?

Would you have chose a v8 at 210hp 300lbs and rated 13 city 17mpg highway?
Or would have you really chosen 135hp only 200lbs of torque and a 4spd without overdrive getting 10-12mpg in 1987? I really doubt anyone would have chosen the 2f if given the option had been presented at the time for a similar price.

I believe the Land Cruiser was designed for the third world where the 2F was more than enough power. Travel third world roads and you are lucky to average more than 30 miles an hour. 30 mph might be asking a bit much as a matter of fact. The v8 completely unneeded.

In the US of course, our needs are quite different, but not the target market.

I believe the majority of 2f's were sold to U.S. market.....

The "third world" you speak of received the (much finer/more powerful) diesel engine.

Probably true that the 2F sold more in the US than elsewhere in the 80s, but if you think the 2F is slow, you should look at the horsepower/torque numbers for the two diesels they put in the 60-series wagons; the 3B and the 2H. How does 90 horsepower and 160 foot-pounds sound? To be fair, the 12H-T that they put in HJ61s puts out more oompf than a 2F, but they're relatively hard to find compared to the 3B and 2H.

Details.

Its still a third world vehicle and the third world did not need a fancy v8.

IMO, one of the only reasons to by a Toyota over a Chevy, is the engine. Any machine shop will tell you, Chevys are good for 200K and Toyotas are good for 350K (near 500k on my last Toyota).

So why would one take the best part of the Toyota and replace it with a sub standard design?

My 2F broke in the last 2 weeks, rings gone with huge blowby and big miss
238K

granted I determined the PO'ers really raped this machine by not maintaining it.
I got it at 189K

It would be nice if it did have a Toyota engine but then the 2f is just a knock off of a really really old Chevy engine....

Right.
A really old, really reliable, really torquey engine designed to go slow with class.

i have broke 100mph in my 60 a few times  but that being said. lets leave the high speeds for the vehicles that arent sprung over on 37s hahaha

I just got new tires. Should I start another thread and call it, "Why every 60 should have 37's."

HAHA... Why not make it a "Royal Rumble" and start a thread titled, " Why everyone should have an FJ60!!!!!!!!" on all the other sections... 45's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 100's... And add it in the Mini truck section while we are at it....

Seriously, great read...

Living in rural NM, 55 to 60 MPH is all I need. The roads here are such that 40 to 45 is about all I can drive. The 2F is a very sturdy and reliable engine. The FJ60 is fine for me. I did change the gearing, tire size and transmission to get it just about right for conditions here.
