Which winch would you choose?

if you are in the mood to something extra-super crafty: take a look online for Ibex off-road. that guy does a very nice center-mount winch that can go forward or reverse. one direction will always be double-line pull (slow) but it is very versatile and cuts the weight in half vs. 2 winches (also easier to deal with the electrical and such.

The only downside I see is that it makes it tough to monitor how the line is coiling on the drum. But I'm sure someone can craft a solution there!

looks great, i love what you have done!

For those that missed my switch crazy thread in the 80 forum, I ended up ordering a pair of seat heater switches for interior winch control :) (front and soon to be rear)

Now I don't have to breakout the handheld remote everytime I wanna use them

The red key still needs to be in place for winch to operate, so I don't have to worry about the wife winching the hook through the fairlead while trying to warm her tuckus in the morning

wow that same winch is $686 at the same site now. Anybody know where to find one for the $539?

First, that is a great install thread. Thanks to the OP and thanks to wakesetter for bumping it up. This is some info I have been researching as well.

Here you go wakesetter.......Superwinch EP9.0. $531 with FREE shipping. I don't know anything about this site or company and have absolutely no affiliation. I just did a google search for superwinch ep9.0 and came across this site. Looks like a pretty good deal to me. They are based in CA.

I love this winch setup, and I'd like to do the same type of install on my Cruiser. Does anyone know of a higher-rated winch that will fit behind the factory bumper? And, would it be possible to use a Hawse fairlead for an even more stealthy install?
Thanks.

A little photo update....

I hit a freezer on the highway a while back and damaged the factory bumper and mangled the roller fair lead :o

Picked up a BIOR plate bumper and re-installed the EP9.0

Added a toggle switch and light under the dash....

It controls a PAC500 main cut-off solenoid mounted under the hood that sends power to both front and rear winches...

Each winch has their own safety cut-off key switch that sends sends power to the controller circuit which can be used by either the hand controller or the interior control switches (seat heater switches)

Love it!!

Funny beach recovery last weekend....

I went to New Smyrna beach on Sunday and had to recover an Expedition that got stuck while trying to load a busted PWC

Winched him out twice, but he kept getting stuck and since the tide was coming in fast, I just hooked up a tow strap and hauled him 2 miles back to the beach ramp

What's funny is that the driver's wife and drunken mother in law were fighting the entire time and the side and rear cams got the footage :D

I couldn't make out what they were saying in Spanish (except for a few choice bad words), so I just added some subtitles to the video (FFWD to 6:20) ;)

98 Snake Eater,

Since it looks like you clocked the release lever and clocked it back, I wanted to ask you about the bolts holding on the Brake Cap and the then the gear ring. Did you actually have 9 of the black allen head bolts holding on the gear ring and 3 short stainless allen bolts hold on the Brake cap, or did you only have 6 black bolts and 3 really long ones holding on the brake cap that also when through the gear ring?

You're really testing an old man's memory here, but I don't think there were that many bolts

I think 3 short and 3 long or maybe 6 short and 3 long :hhmm:
