I use the grey label Pennzoil 25W50 GT racing oil shown above (labeled for off road use only) and the Comp Cams assembly lube. It is overkill when it comes to ZDDP but is is cheaper than a rebuild.

where are you picking this up??? and what is the cost ?? i was going with rotella this change..might do something diffrent

The Pennzoil 25w50 is a great oil, just mail-order only for me... Too bad, 'cuz it contains almost 2000 ppm of zinc.

Pennzoil 25W50

I have been picking the Pennzoil up from Quality Petroleum in North Little Rock. They stock it. It was like $41 case the last time I purchased. I am sure it has gone up.

I have been getting the Comp Cams Assembly Lube from Mud Connection.

It is an expensive oil change but a lot cheaper than a rebuild!

Don't add any thing else to that oil ! Too much zddp can damage the cam, too. Does something to the metallurgy, but I'm not that versed to be able to tell ya.

Well, went to Autozone today to get a case of this stuff and the new crap on the shelf Castrol GTX Diesel is now SN rated. Castrol's website has not been updated. Should I email them and use all CAPS ?!?

F:censor:K !

Another one bites the dust.

Guess I'm gonna have to search down the CAT DEO ... Or spend mo' money.

:crybaby:

So why not just use a ZDDP additive? Easy to find in my local auto parts stores.

Additives are hooey. IMHO :D :meh:

I'm using the ZDDP additives for now, but it torks me off to hafta spend an extra $10-15 to get something that was in oil for free previously.

I also read somewhere that there is some concern that these hi-detergent super slick new oils don't work well w/ the additive. The detergent package treats the additive as a "pollutant". Dunno.

Looks like big brother is trying to force all kinds of "good things" down our throat... Not to mention the phasing out of all things that allow us to run our favorite old rigs! :(

I've read that too... And I also read that the oil has to be made from the proper base stock for the zddp additive to "take" ... But I dunno either, that's why I may now have to break down and buy the expensive sheet and have the boys in brown throw the box at my door... But before that, I'm gonna see what the NAPA dudes can order.

I hate progress.

:bang:

What expensive brands/blends are you considering if NAPA doesn't come through?

Probably the Amsoil Z-rod 20/50... But at $100 an oil change, I'd have to leave it in a year to be cost effective, I suppose... They used to have a diesel blend 15w40 that was about $30/gal, but I don't see it on their site anymore, so time to see what's out there, again.

Or, I might just run Rotella T w/ a qt or two of Racing oil or Motorcycle oil mixed in... I really dunno yet.

This is the new bottle of the Castrol GTX Diesel 15w-40... Of course, it's "New and Improved" ... Shizzle.

Rotella T is what I currently run. Too bad about the "new improved" Castrol GTX. Was considering it in the near future...

I have read a good amount of info about this oil, it seems very popular in the classic car circles. What do you think?

Welcome!

Zack

I'm running Rotella T straight 30 weight with 2 BG oil additives. BG guy claims it takes care of the zinc need, but I have no personal research to back this up.

I personally have been trolling around older parts stores as I pass them in my travels. Tractor Supply and Atwoods have been good sources so far for finding older stocks of SL/CI oil at relatively good prices.

I found this at TSC, it appeared to be older stock as it was all SL/CI. I bought a couple cases of this for $3 a qt. (25% off) after pointing out to the store manager how old and dusty all of his backstock was and if he'd cut me a deal I'd take it all off his hands. I would have bought it all at full price just to have in stock, but hey its a deal!

I recently found some older stock of Mystik JT8 Semi-Syn at an Atwoods, which is very similar to Tractor Supply. They had several cases of this and it seemed like a decent price to me ($3.70ish a qt) so I bought as much as the wife :princess: would let me. This stuff tests well on bitog, so I'm glad to stock it up.

I now have enough oil stocked up for around 6 oil changes. That should last a while...the truck has averaged around 1400 miles a year for its 30 years on earth.
