Nice document, but aged. Thanks!

I use salad oil...

Problem is that many of the oils that are mentioned in the article have actually changed since 2007 which makes the readings moot.

Yes sorry. I thought it was a 2012 article but later realized I was mistaken. I just heard back from Valvoline and for instance the premium blue 15w40 is currently 1270 ppm zinc, 1140 ppm phosphorus....

Anyone ever used this? Supposed to be made for cars made before 1988

after 10w40 and 15w40 now 20w50 is my favourite.
fast and good oil pressure with new oil, engine sounds nice, good additives.
I bought a 60 liter oildrum for best price and share with others 12 liter every change.

If the oil ages it becomes thicker so oil pressure rises, but the oil level lowers.

I have an 83 FJ60 with 171,000 miles. After reading and studying the Motor Oil University on Bobtheoilguy.com, I swtiched to 5wx30w. I also installed an oil temp gauge. Most of my driving is short, 15-20 minutes in town. My oil pressure has remained the same and the oil temp stays between 150 and 180 deg F. The temp got up to 195 once this summer running the ac in town after an hour of stop and start driving. I want to monitor this on a long highway trip and longer periods of low speed driving. For my in town (boring) on pavement, short trips, multiple start ups, this seemed to make sense to have a less thick oil on start up.

Rotella T either 10-30, 15-40 or both...

and a bit of seafoam in the crankcase too...

Just did some checking and looks like the NAPA Gold cross reference for the WIX #51773 2qt filter is #1773. Anyone out there able to confirm? Just want for reference for the next oil change (which honestly won't be until after the new year, figure a 6 month OCI regardless of mileage (doubt I will hit more than 5k) is ok.

Are there any drawbacks to moving to a 2qt filter? I read on an RV forum they were suggesting that you add an extra qt. if you move to the 2qt filter. Is that safe?

I installed that filter on my 3FE. The pic above is a 2F I believe. IIRC, the 3FE is "destroked". Is the actual block shorter? The reason I ask is because the filter almost interferes with the spark plug wire to plug connection. In other words, the filter is almost too tall for my 3FE.

Anyone else running a Napa Gold 1773 on their 3FE engine?

I use the Napa Fleet diesel oil. Change it often with a big filter.

This is a tractor motor that spins @ 2.5k RPM. Keep it clean.

My take is that it is just as easy to get oil that is more like the oil that was in use when these vehicles were made and to use filters that are purported to be "better".

It is really no more trouble or expense... just a little bit of attention needs to be given to the process. I think this is a low price to pay for what MIGHT extend the life of your engine...

In reality we will never know if this really helps but if it is that easy to make the effort then why not?

I am using Chevron Delo 400LE. I bought 10 gallons of the stuff for $113 at Wal Mart on sale. I change my oil every 4 months regardless of mileage.

No reason at all to do this...

People do weird stuff to make themselves feel better about machines. I had a boss some years ago who fancied himself a computer geek (but really had little idea of what he was doing). He would periodically decide that a computer in the office (usually one that was running just fine) needed to be "massaged" and he would spend half a day running a bunch of diagnostic and "maintenance" software on it. These were Macs and this was in the late 90s before the explosion of malware. Gave him something to do, I guess.

I think the time-interval oil change comes from the old adage that you should change your oil every 3000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. Probably came form old Penzoil commercials or something.
