I need (well, lets be honest i want) a 5 speed for my DD 86. It has a carbed 22r and a 4 speed which i believe means that i need a g series trans. Does anybody know of some toyota yards or retailers preferably on the east coast where i could procure one. Im hoping that there is a company like cruiserparts out there except for minis. I know there are places like cal mini in cali but i dont think i want to ship a tranny cross-country.

Also, am i correct in thinking that a R series trans will not bolt up without some kind a new bellhousing or bellhousing surgery?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say...

If you can find any 5speed that went behind a 20r(ixneigh on the 20r trannys), 22r or 22RE, you should be able to eyeball if it'll fit or not. And I''m 99% sure they all will.

The bad part about all this is, you'll only be getting a whopping:rolleyes: 500rpms a minute off the motor you have now.

It's not a substantial amount, but it is some, and it is free. (what I call when you have the option)

At the least, you'll need to replace the BH. At the most, I have forgot if the BH is just a "bolt on" or if you have to replace the front half of the case along with it, b/c the BH bolt pattern may or may not be the same as the front half of the case that accepts it....I don't remember. But I think all you need is the bell housing.

If you can find a 2WD RTE it will be the HD V6 tranny, only it wont have the low 1st gear and :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::bang: the speedo cable is on the OTHER side. Making it a ROYAL P.I.T.A. You either have to pull the dash and replace the cable, or fab-up some type of extension. Been dare, done dat.

Hilux... you... oh never mind.

Any tranny out of a 4-cyl truck will bolt up to a 22R or 22RE. Sounds to me like you have an L-series tranny, you can verify this by checking the VIN tag on the firewall.

A W56 tranny would be a good upgrade to 5-speed, and they are very popular. There is an R-series that you can get that will bolt right to the 22R, the infamous R151F "turbo" tranny, but it s VERY difficult to find and expensive.

You could also go with the more popular R150F that they put on the 3.0L V6 engine, but then yes you will need to find a turbo bell housing, again unobtanuim.

Personally, I would find a W56 from behind a 22re. Get the bellhousing with the tranny since I don't think the W-series tranny will bolt to your existing G-series bellhousing. I'm not 100% sure of that and I'm too lazy right now to do some homework.

As far as the R151F, yes, you would need to obtain the bellhousing with the tranny. There is no other substitute for bolting a R-series tranny to a 22r/re engine. It doesn't matter if it's a R151 (22RET tranny) or R150 (V6 tranny). With the R150 you would need an adapter to run the gear drive transfer case. With the R151 the gear drive case will bolt up ... after it's converted to 23 spline (not a big deal).

There is a remote possibility the R151 bellhousing is still available from Toyota. I recently bought one. It was special order and was shipped from Japan to the astonishment of CruiserDan.

Thanks a lot for the info, for some reason i was having problems getting definitive info on the subject. So, a W 56 would be the 2wd version correct? I wanted to make sure that you all realized that, its in my sig but not everybody notices that shiz.

Also, does anybody have any sources for one other than scour the net/trading post?
