I'd bet the 2.2mm snap ring, has more than 0.20mm gap.
You may be right. Pass side done. I hit about 50 ft lbs on pass side to hit 14.5 BAPL on fish scale. Buttoned everything up. Checked for play on both sides. Driver side has a similar bit of slop as before I adjust bearings. And I hit 65 ft lbs on that side. I can’t tell for sure, but I think it’s a ball joint and / or control arm bushings. Allowing some slop that behaves like loose wheel bearings. I can hear the similar sound as the 12-6 play when I’m going slow over bumps or make slow tight turns. I’ve got my local dealer lined up to replace the control arms. Then I’ll recheck the 12-6 play. Hopefully it wont be there.
 
4ft-lbf is not the final torque, it's the starting point. Many including I, read FSM wrong. Preload (PL) is the goal, not torque on adjusting nut!

When reading FSM, in the light of; "preload (using fish scale) is the goal". Which I shoot for PL of12.5lb, and get between 45ft-lbf to 84ft-lbf torque on adjusting nut to achieve preload of ~12.5lb (spec 9.5lb to 15lb pull).

If at preload of 12.5lb, we only reach say 20ft-lbf torque on adjusting nut to achieve. Bearings or grease are in bad condition or has issue or grease/bearings to cold. The better the bearings, the cleaner, the better the grease (at room temp). The high torque we reach on adjusting nut, reaching spec preload range.

Note: preload is tested at ~ 68F. If grease cold (say 40F, 30F, 20F), preload reading (pounds of pull on fish scale) go up. Since grease thickens when cold.

When wheel bearings serviced at each 30K miles. Claw washer scoring, indicates wheel bearing were to loose. Loose wheel bearings vibrate. Claw washer scoring, is due to vibration. As the scoring (gouge on claw washer) increases, wheel bearing loosen more and faster, vibration then increases, scoring increases more, bearing loosen more.

Wheel bearing service done correctly, claw washer will not be scored at 30K miles. I supper clean and uses very good grease and make wheel bearing very tight. I've seen them still tight, at 70K miles later.




Note: Do not reuse lock washer, snap ring or grease cap. Use proper size (thickness) snap ring, to achieve hub flange gap of less than 0.20mm.

~2k miles ago I torqued to 65ft-lbs in order to achieve 12lbs of preload on a brand new bearing & race. I started getting a bit of wandering on the freeway so I opened up the hub and found that the bearings had loosened to ~8lbs preload. I decided to go up to 15lbs of preload and was able to achieve this at 84ft-lbs.

I’m on 35in Wildpeak AT4W’s so maybe that’s why 12lbs of preload wasn’t enough. Each wheel is around ~103lbs 😳

It's normal, for wheel bearings loosen as we drive. At 2K miles, very common to find 8lb BWPL. By 30K miles, they be ~1lb BWPL.

A 8lb preload (BWPL), would not result in wondering. They wouldn't be any play in wheel bearings, at 8lb BWPL.
One would be able to feel (12 & 6 o'clock play) loose wheel bearings, if they factored in wondering. Those have zero BWPL.

I do like setting BWPL, to higher limit of BWPL range. In lifted and or rigs over sizes tires. I also like, wheel bearings' service at 25K miles vs 30K on stock, in those.

I've never gotten above ~87ft-lbf. to get BPLW of 15lb. What I have found. The higher the torque to achieve 12.5 BWPL. The better broken-in and condition bearings are in. Note: I set bearing with temp between ~68F. Lower grease temp we get low BWLP, higher temp we get higher BWPL at same toque.

When I installed new bearings and races 2k miles ago, I achieved a BWPL of 12lbs with a torque of 64ft-lbs. 2k miles later, it dropped from 12lbs to 9lbs. It seems like a 3lb drop in 2k miles is a bit excessive. If the BWPL decreases at a linear rate, I'd hit a BWPL of 0lbs in just 8k miles.

It's not excessive. New bearing settle and seat. But new or good used. They all loosen, as we drive. I see 54ft-lbt to 64ft-lbf, on new. Next service, they/ll come in 10 to 20ft-lbf higher, to achieve same 12.5 BWPL.

I have found kicking locking nut torque up, to ~55ft-lbf. Service last longer.

Once bearing do loosen, to no BWLP. They chatter (vibrate). Results in claw washer wearing a groove into them (scoring). Then wheel bearings, loosen faster. Then chatter even more, and so wear more.

Toyota found 30K miles a good point to service. If a at 30K miles. I find scoring on claw washer. I'll do next service at 25k miles.
