I've got a '74(see sigline) that had a disk brake front axle swapped in before I bought it in 2000. Of course '74s came with drums and it originally had warn hubs because there is a sticker on the dash.

Like the title says, what years did aisin locking hubs come on disk brake front axles? Now I realize that they could have kept the drum housing and swapped in the internals, but I think it's probably more likely that they swapped out the whole front end. What say you?

...mmmmmm.....Skyline.

Let me answer your question with a question.

Why do you want to know what years came with these hubs? Are you trying to identify the origin of your axle, third member, brake parts, other by the lockouts? Are you looking for parts for the lockouts?

Maybe I am reading way more into this, but what is your real question?

You're right. You are reading more into it. I was just curious, honestly. I haven't seen many other 40s with Aisin hubs and was wondering what years came with them...

had it for lunch actually..4way and a cheese coney

Pull the asians of an FJ55 earlier years, they have a shorter body and will work for you, Larry

The disc brake OEM lock out that would be found on the FJ55 actually has a LONGER body, not shorter...since the outer fing birfield stub on a disc brake axle was longer by 3/8" until 01/79...when they shortened the outer stub...and used the more common, shorter lock out body.

Is there a FAQ re: birfields, locking hubs, wheel hubs, and rotors? It took me a long time to figure it out for my DB conversion, and my lack of understanding resulted in my having to purchase some duplicate parts. Here is what I believe to be correct:

Birfields:
Coarse (10?) spline 69 thru 75, fine (27?) spline thereafter. Birfield stub axle length reduce by about 3/8" starting in 1979, so 76-78 are oddball longer disk brake birfs. FJ60, 79+ FJ40, and mini truck birfs are interchangeable. Shorter birfs are stronger and slightly larger in diameter than the 69-75 birfs, however a 69-75 axle housing can be easily clearanced for the larger diameter.

Locking hubs:
came in different spline counts and body heights to match certain birfields. the 3/8" shorter birfs can be used with the longer locking hubs by using a washer and bolt to retain the end of the stub axle instead of the C-clip. However, the longer birfs cannot be used with the shorter locking hubs.

Spindles: All Disl brake FJ40, FJ60, and solid axle Mini spindles are interchangeable.

Wheel hubs and rotors: 76-78 Fj40 rotor bolted to hub; 79+ fj40, Fh60, Solid axle Mini rotor attaches to wheel hub with wheel studs. The rotor/wheel hub assemblies are interchangeable as a set. The later (wheel studs thru rotor) rotors are considerably cheaper than the earlier bolt on versions, however, they are more work and expense to change out because wheel lugs have to be removed and replaced, typically with a press. Mini rotors are not vented, but 4runner rotors are.

Thats all I have time for now.

"I guess you didn't read the whole post. I am not looking for hubs"

I guess your right, I'll mind my own business from now on, cheers, Larry

So Longfields come in both sizes, or always the shorter?

When I build my front axle I'd like to run longs and his beefed aisin hubs.

Do the knuckles have anything to do with anything? Mine are from '78.

TIA

Only the later model, shorter style.

You can get a stock OEM lock out and replace the drive gear with the Long Chromo gear. I would only run Longs with the OEM lockout, the Long Chromo gear and the ARP wheel bearing hub stud kit from Frontrange off road.

Knuckles themselves do not really have anything to do with it, unless you want to run a hi-steer set up. If so, then I would find the later model, 01/79 and on, knuckle assemblies and install the ARP knuckle studs, again, only available from Frontrange off road.

the answer is all of them....

In one way or another....

What years did aisin hubs come on disk brake axles? ?

To further complicate matters, based on the number of 1979 and later 40 series that I have seen, worked on and disassembled that had drive flanges on the wheel bearing hub instead of a lock out assembly, I would bet that OEM lock outs did not float across the pond installed on a 40 series at anytime during the run....

Provided they have not ground the mounting tab off the axle housing for the brake line tee, a drum brake axle housing from 07/70 to 08/75 would have a tab on the driver side of the axle housing, inboard of the u-bolt location, on the rear side of the housing.

A disc brake axle housing 09/75 to 84 has a tab on the upper passenger side of the axle housing, inboard of the u-bolt location, just above the differential mounting flange. Removal of the bolt that holds the T and hose assembly in place, or bending the bracket out of the way is required to remove the front differential on these axles.
