What years did aisin hubs come on disk brake axles?

Poser just fitted Aisin hubs to my 12/76 axle (that had Warns) by replacing the '76-'78 birfs with some Newfields that I bought new on e'bay. I run the stock wheels with skinny 33x9.50s and the Warns stuck out waaaay too far. The Aisins stick out, too, just not as far. But the old setup looked like it belonged on Ben Hur's chariot.

To further complicate matters, based on the number of 1979 and later 40 series that I have seen, worked on and disassembled that had drive flanges on the wheel bearing hub instead of a lock out assembly, I would bet that OEM lock outs did not float across the pond installed on a 40 series at anytime during the run....

This is true...

Okay. I've got it now. Different question now. It would seem that drive flanges would be stronger than even the Aisin hubs. Why don't more people that use their 40 for the trail only have drive flanges?

I'm guessing it is an availability issue since most of the drive flanges were probably chunked in the scrap pile years ago. Most folks who wheel have fixed the shift gate or taken it off in order to have 2 low.

Long makes Chromo drive flanges.... ;)

A trail-only truck does not mean that it may not see road time occasionally. For example, depending on the TLCA event you choose to attend, you may end up pounding pavement for many miles to get to that good trail. Sometimes the trailhead does not afford the provisions for tow rigs and trailers to be left while enjoying the trail.

It is a trade-off, just like so many things, not only with these trucks, but also in life.

Listen to POSER. Trust me. He is a wealth of knowledge on tlc's. I have learned more from reading his occasional comments than any book. Read, listen and learn.

I'm aware. Poser knows his sheeite. But I'll take your saying one step further. Read, listen, learn, and do. You learn more from doing than from anything else.

Provided they have not ground the mounting tab off the axle housing for the brake line tee, a drum brake axle housing from 07/70 to 08/75 would have a tab on the driver side of the axle housing, inboard of the u-bolt location, on the rear side of the housing.

A disc brake axle housing 09/75 to 84 has a tab on the upper passenger side of the axle housing, inboard of the u-bolt location, just above the differential mounting flange. Removal of the bolt that holds the T and hose assembly in place, or bending the bracket out of the way is required to remove the front differential on these axles.

My housing has the tee on the driver's side. So I guess they kept the drum housing and replaced the fing birfs with stuff from a later model disk brake axle.

What is the length of the short hubs?

Here is a weird thing that happened the first time I tore down my front axle about 5 years ago. I couldn't get the birfs out of the housing. They were too big and I had to grind the housing ears to get them out. I know you are thinking well if they got them in then they should come out right? That's what I thought too... I don't know if the knuckle clamped down some or when they put the birfs in it was freezing cold outside or what.

somtimes you just have to play with it a while....curse and swear, jiggle it a bit more then it'll come out....they dont always want to go in and out easily but if they got it in there then it can come out, its just a matter of how long you wanna sit there jiggling your stub...

Long fine spline birfs CAN be used with the short hubs. I've got this in one of my rigs at the moment after a field fix.

I suspected this when my '78 40 came home from Moab wearing a 60 hub on the long side. I was not there (long story), but it was a field fix.

Is the trick that you can do it on one side, but not both?

Nope. It works on both sides. Works best if you have a Martack on the axle shaft.

Most likely the axles were installed and then the knuckles were put on...pretty common with disc brake swaps... at least you were not in the field working on this when you found it out. :)

Thanks all!

This is a great thread. I have just gathered a bunch of stuff to do the large pattern mini upgrade on my 78 JF40. I was also wondering about Hub / Rotor compatibility between the two and whether or not I could use my 78 long birfs as trail spares with the mini Aisin hubs. All answered right here.

Just one more question. Is the spline count on the inner shafts the same for course and fine birfs. I’m assuming that when converting from drum to the mini disks, that you can simply install the mini outer on an early 40 inner shaft.

Thanks again

Spline count is the same on all inner axle shafts

Hmmm... So why monkey with the long bodies if you still have long birfs? Sounds like it just pushes your inner axles in a little bit in the spiders.

What brand are these hubs?

I have a '77, I just always assumed I had aisin hubs, anyone know what they are?
