What would you do ? 33 vs 35 with the price difference

Keep the 33's. When you start running into trails where you can't make it on 33's then start looking at bigger tires.

A small 2" lift looks great with 33's.

My philosophy would be to say "when you can't make it on 33s, become a better line picker and a driver". 😁 $ for $, 33s will get you a lot further while not breaking your wallet.

Has anyone mentioned that a 35 inch spare tire doesn't fit under the vehicle? That is the thing keeping me from making the upgrade--- the need to save up for a rear bumper with a tire carrier.

I’m in the 35” camp on this one. I struggled with this for a while when trying to figure out what size tires I wanted to purchase this past spring. I ended up finding a guy that ran a mobile tire operation and he came out to my house and installed five new 35x12.5 Cooper’s for $1450. Here’s what it looks like with stock wheels and a 2” lift.

I live at 5,000ft above sea level and drive into the mountains to wheel and camp in the summer and ski in the winter. I'm on 32" tires and stock gearing and I already wish the gearing was lower for power on mountain roads.

I would never consider 35" tires without re-gearing for mountain driving. My vote is keep the 33's and enjoy the truck. You can lift it or not depending on your preference, a little extra clearance under the rockers from a 2" suspension lift is nice, make sure to do sufficient caster correction to keep the on-road manners in line. I think 80's look good with a 2" lift and 33's, and look even better with a 2" lift and 35's. Looks aren't everything and an 80 is one of the coolest trucks on or off the road either way ;).

33's will take you more places than you imagine if you take your time and are ok with dragging some armor. The pic in my avatar is my rig on 33's crossing golden crack in Moab, so forest roads are no problem.

I did step up to 35's on my last tire change. The truck is noticeably slower, brakes worse and wonders more. For me thats a worth while trade off for the extra trail capability but I like to take it rock crawling. I am in the process of building a more dedicated trail rig and when thats done I will probably take the cruiser back to 33's.

First picture is of the truck on 33's, 3" lift and 1" body lift. Second picture is the same but with 35's. Third picture (just for fun) is the 33's with just the 1" body lift. I'll admit on my truck the 35's looks better but I didn't hate the 33's with the lift either. I really liked the 33's with just the body lift (looks wise) and I personally think 33's would look great with a 2" lift.

Are you on stock gearing?

I love how mine runs with 4.88s and 35s.
Yeah that’s what I have too. I’m curious how it would be with 4.88s and 33s. I have a second set of wheels that I should try out. Some people say it will be short geared but I talked to a few very respectable people in the community and they vouched for 33s and 4.88s.

Here’s the formula to figure out the gear ratio you need to make a bigger tire run like it did with stock tires and gears.

  • New tire/old tire x stock ratio = required
  • 35/28 x 4.10 = 4.95, or 4.88 as the closest option

Had 4.88 with 285 before going to 315. The RPM is too high on freeway driving. The 315 brought it down to 4% Speedo diff. At 75 RPM is 2800. At 80mph RPM 3k.

The OP is (was) concerned about spending a few extra dollars to upgrade tires, I doubt they are going to spend the $10,000 you would have to, in order to make all of those upgrades.
Sorry but we own an 80....nothing is cheap about it.
Once on 33s, you wish you've gone to 35s. Now I wish I should've skipped 315s and got 37s.😂
2.5 lift and 37s is the ideal look.
(Yes and some cutting and trimmings)

Has anyone mentioned that a 35 inch spare tire doesn't fit under the vehicle? That is the thing keeping me from making the upgrade--- the need to save up for a rear bumper with a tire carrier.

Many modern cars are sold with a little space saver spare wheel.

I never worried about carrying anything but a 33" spare when i had 35s on.

Currently have 33s on my cruiser, and stock size spare. It's only got to get you home, or to a shop. Differentials make the adjustment as needed
