What would you do ? 33 vs 35 with the price difference

I am definitely in the "bigger is better" camp. I am after all the originator of MIBS. ;)

A 35 does not weigh enough more than a 33 to care. The impact on your gearing and brakes... same thing.

Personally I do think that 35s look a tad better under a 3 inch lift than 33s do.

A 35 inch tire will in fact fit in the original spare tire space under the rig. if you chose to carry it there ( I will on a long road trip over crappy roads in the middle of nowhere... other than that, I make other arrangements. It does stick down a lot).

All of that said...

The ground clearance difference between 33s and 35s... again, not enough to matter IMHO. The places you will get to... few people are working at the limit of their abilities and their rig's to the point that there will be any difference of where the two different tires will let you get to.

If you like the difference in cosmetics enough to spend the (admittedly small) extra money... Go for it. But there really is no other reason. :)

It's a done deal. I put the 35s on today including the spare. So it cost me $40 extra per tire but these look beefy and will be perfect with a future planned 2 inch lift.

For those that care, 35s easily fit on a stock 80 series. I even have a front bull bumper and rear bumper/tire carrier and still haven't noticed any rubbing with the extra weight

I'm running wildpeak at4w 315/75/16

Glad you got it figured out and are happy with your choice. I ended up splitting the difference on mine. No lift, tires are 285/75/17. Pretty much comes out to a 34x11. I ended up removing my spare tire and carrier, and will keep my full sized spare in the cargo area.

Is there a trick to doing this? Do you have let the air out or something else? This would be good news. I would like to upgrade on my next tire purchase, but I don't know if I will have fancy tire-carrying Higgys bumper by then.

No trick at all.

Like everyone else I had always heard that a 35 would not fit in the factory spare location. I never bothered to try either. Not my favorite place for a spare. I decided to see if I might actually be able to make it sorta fit before a run from Anchorage to Cold Foot and Circle and back. I really did not want to make that run with no spare if I had a choice and I did not want to sacrifice that much interior storage room either. I did not have a bumper tire carrier on that rig, so...
On a factory FZJ80 rim, a 315 fits in the OEM spare tire location with no complications. It touches the factory/dealer installed tow bar. It does not touch the panhard bar or anything else and it cranks all the way up.
A 315 sticks down further than the OEM 275 when it is stored there. By... well, 40mm of course. ;)

Just like any spare in that location it is gonna be a lot more prone to dragging that if it was... simply not there.

A bumper mount is a better answer if the rig is gonna see off the road use. Both for the slight clearance loss under the rig as well as the hassle of getting it out if you happen to be in a sloppy muddy situation. (You seldom need a spare while you are mired in a swamp, but anything can happen, right?)

And fwiw, you can't install a rear winch or aux duel tank with the spare there either. 🤔 ;)

In the end, in spite of what people will tell you..."35 inch" spare will mount just fine in the factory spare tie location.

Been down this rabbit hole and 37s is where i draw the line on my 80s without custom 3 links, butcher up the sheet metal, engine swaps, 1 tons., etc.
