Volvo C303. Pics below are from George's build.

These are already left hand, but still lots of things to do:

find donor axle housing and steal all brackets, spring bases, etc.

Need to track down parts source for Volvo seals.

Need to figure out disk brake e-brake conversion.

Stock they were vacuum activated, need to add pump or see if I can convert to air pressure.

Think I am convinced to keep drum brakes for now.

Need to find rims for it. What size to get though 16" fits, but see most running 17". Think final tire will be about 40".

I love this build.

What's the bolt pattern? Will a 16.5" humvee rim work. I know that limits tires but still a tone of large sizes avaliable till. Ran them on my jeep loved them. With 39.5iroks

Uhh.. ok. We're even on acquisitions at the house for the week. You have taken it to a whole new level

Info drop.

Volvo C303 Front Axles:
1. strength: in stock form can handle moderate wheeling up to a 38" tire with little breakage.
2. weight and clearance: heavier axle with a lot clearance (portal)
3. aftermarket Upgrades: High strength birf available and custom machined detroit will increase strength. No portal box upgrades that I know of that would handle over a 42 effectively without stripping portal gear. Though some suppliers are working on.
4. what will be the weak link: In stock form the factory locker spline. With aftermarket birfs and custom Detroit it will be the portal reduction gear.
Pros: Great Clearance due to the portals, and lighter than other portal axles.
Cons: Expensive, Very Hard to locate (Importing) and little aftermarket support. Moderate vehicle modification to fit properly.
Measurements:
WMS to WMS: ~70"
Axles Splines: Inner 27 spline
Ring Gear Dia: 8"
Pinion Offset: 6.25" from center to pass side
Tube Dia: 3.25" square tube
Portal Drop: 4.5"

Volvo C303 Rear Axles:

Спасибо за добрые слова. Ура !

The Foo now has international fame...

oh man all the portal research i did years ago is coming back. i was really close to pulling the trigger on more than one occasion. almost bought a 1958 unimog 404 in KC 5 years ago it was a rear opportunity that close. the Volvo actually can have a "decent" gear ratio what are yours? talking about 40" tires you should be fine either way not like your driving cross country or have a diesel with rev limits that lead you to buying custom gears. who does that.... this addiction is hard. looking forward to seeing the move forward. looking to do coilovers? I've got some experience

ooooooohhhhh coilovers..... That makes me think happy thoughts..... Might have to ring your bell on that one.

5.99 final gearing. George said his would do 65, but I rarely take this on the highway, so I am not too worried.

For now, plan is to graft on all the mounting hardware from a LC axle over to these axles, really following George's build.

If anyone see a LC at a junkyard, let me know. I am not willing to tear up a locked axle for these bits.

Portal-Tek was making these awhile back but they sold the rights to Torque Axle. Torque plans to make them again but from what I have heard it is back burner for them, they mostly focus on Super14s.

The axles use Ford 9" center flipped upside down, special oil slinger in there for that. Housings are Spidertrax. As you can see I have got RCV front CV shafts. Wilwood brakes all around. These axles easily handle 40" rubber. A lot of common off the shelf parts in them too. Gearing options, locker options, brake options and more. Not cheap at all though and like I say I don't think Torque is making them right now.

Cheers

I looked at their website a few weeks back and there is nothing. Even searching for "portal" nothing.... Sad.

@RMP&O thanks for the cruiser porn. I have been following your 60/62/80 thread. Keep the progress posted.

What did you put those portal techs in? I saw you were trying to sell them years ago.

Thanks!

I was going to put them under a Cruiser but decided against it in the end. I bought them for an 83 Nissan Patrol and that is what they are still under, and staying under.

They are sweet axles, actually glad I never sold them.

Cheers

Volvo portal axles are easily adaptable to both coil and leaf sprung Land Rovers. They are fitted as standard with 1310 drive flanges which means that your standard Land Rover prop shaft or your GON2FAR custom prop shaft will bolt straight up with no modification. The diffs are even the same length as Land Rover diffs so there are no length issues with the prop shafts either. Having been originally designed for a leaf sprung application these axles are, virtually a straight bolt on option for series Land Rovers. For coil sprung applications new brackets will need to be welded to the axles to accept the radius rods etc.
