i have got my eyes on a bj70 for sale locally in vancouver.
its totally stock with the regular options, with 365,000km on it.
the frame and underbody is very rusty. the shocks and axles look like they have seen better days, theyre pretty rusty axles could stand to be rebuilt. as for the body is has rust holes in it by the wheel wells and the running boards are just rust flakes. the body is straight, doesnt look like its seen much rough use, maybe some forestry roads. the tires are ok. front window is cracked. the owner is asking 6500 firm, he bought a new fj cruiser.
i know its rare, but 6500 seems pretty high for a stock rusty cruiser in need of repair. i want to offer him 3000 as is dont even need to test drive it..
whats it worth?

I was looking at BJ70's this summer in Ontario (luckily I found the right one for me).

Stock, good condition ones were anywhere from 9 to 14,000.

Within that range I saw an average of 200,000km and typical frame rust. I've heard the km's don't matter so much as the frame/body are the first to go and the most expensive to repair.

Well it also depends on what you want from it. Its never going to be pretty again and any rust repair work probably wont last too long.
Its got a high klm engine and the gearbox and other mechanicals have also done those klms.
I know north american prices are higher than what we pay but even 3K is a lot for something like that
IMO I would look elsewhere and spend a little more.Stay in touch with this forum and something better may pop up and you will be in a better position to recognise it

If the frame is "very rusty" why would you even make an offer on it? I mean it's potentially a parts-truck, unless you have a BJ70 frame sitting around. The body sounds like it's gone, and the engine has high mileage...$3000? ....it's your money.

Well, for that kind of money and some more (which you would pour into repairs on that truck, trust me) you could take a look at some of the smaller JDM models. Because if you buy a truck like that, you WILL pour money into it, the vast majority of which you will never get back, and you will still have a rusty looking truck ready for the parts bin.

JDM JDM blah blah blah. You guys crack me up. What if he's willing to put a couple days and a few dollars to fix the frame and body in a DIY way ? Even a rustbucket will cruise a long happy drive. If its not pretty and shiny doesn't mean it doesn't work and has no life left in it.

That's pretty high, IMHO. A friend bought a rusty 70 with a rusty frame for slightly less than that, but it had OME, 4.56 gears with dual ARBs, ARB bumper, about $4000 in stereo gear, 8274, sliders, etc.

A rusty body is one thing, but a rusted out frame is another entirely. That rig sounds like a parts truck to me.

heh, DITTO !

I bought a cheap 70 a year ago, fixed the rear quarters, and one rocker ( or started to fix that anyways) and it's been my dd ever since.

steering wheel's on the correct side, and I'm not paying an importer 10 grand
to armour all the tires. ( speaking of money you won't get back.)

depends on condition of course, frame rust can reach a point where it's a little scary...

Its true what you say but I would bet its got a lot more hidden surprises yet be found.

two can play that one:flipoff2: and frankly, I kinda like my 1600 buck bj70. :flipoff2:

The long and short of it is..
The truck is a rust bucket..
The guy that is trying to sell it is asking way too much for it in bad rusty condition.
If Kore wants the truck he'll buy it regardles of what you have to tell him..
BUT for the kind of money being asked for that rusty bucket and a little more, Kore could have a heck of a vehicle that will give him a lot less head aches going the JDM route.

What's it going to be Kore??

rusty body, rusty frame... good MAYBE for parts and definately not woth $6500.
that being said a good friend of mine has a habit of buying other peoples throw aways and driving them for years...

if you do buy it, and i don't recommend it at that price then do not sink a single penny into it unless is desperately needs it. i wouldn't pay more than $2000 and maybe not even that...

as for JDM waste of money, it depends, not everyone like to repair trucks, some like to jump in and go...
each to their own, i drive junkers and sell premium units. those that buy them like them, me, if i owned a sweet ass unit it would look like a junker after the first couple wheeling trips anyway.

I HATE WORKING ON CDM RUST BUCKETS!! working on the JDM units is like workign on a brand new truck, everything comes apart so easily...

just my view, not shared by all...

I have yet to hear of ANYONE buying an old truck regardless of JDM or not who didn't end up with some $urpri$es....

Hey guys...chilling out up here in Princeton with Gold Boy and NickW right now in Gold Boy's stunning bed and breakfast. Mini-MUD get together. :D

IMHO $6500 is way too much, as most people have said. Not sure what condition the 3B and tranny/t-case is in with that kind of mileage. It could be in great condition, good for another couple of hundred thousand, or it could be tired and in need of a rebuild soon. If the truck is totally stock, with no goodies like Norm has mentioned, then even at $3k with all the rust I am not so sure I would be up for it. If it was at bargain basement pricing like Seapotato's $1,600, then that would definitely be something to consider.
