what is a bj70 worth?

hey guys, havent checked this thread in a few days been out in the bush.
i dont know what it is about the bj70's but i think theyre the best trucks you can get. i am going to school to be a heavy duty diesel mechanic, i can fix the rusty frame up, or find a new one.
right now i have a 85 turbodiesel pickup with 425,000km on it. seems high, but everything on it still works like a charm! its just a reg cab in and 6'1, its kind of cramped sometimes. i would rather have a diesel cruiser than my pickup.
either that, or i could swap the 3b and drivetrain into my minitruck! heheheh

actually this truck most likely would be my daily driver and truck for long highway trips and fsr camping trips. the truck that will recieve the off-road abuse will be my turbodiesel pickup. its lifted locked winched but sucks for daily driving and comfort

Sorry but an old and rusty BJ70 is not my idea of long distance daily driver.
I would be looking for something with a longer wheel base and a bit more top end power even if it wasnt a Toyota.
Of course thats my tastes not yours, but Im lookin at it from a safety aspect also.

Have you considered a diesel 60?

yes i am also looking at 60 series wagons, but like i said i love the 70's.
i wont drive anything that isnt diesel, and big diesel trucks arent as efficient!

i will be willing to debate this statement. i had a F250 ford 1995 pickup that would return 28 mpg at 90 km/hr but would pull my house if need be. 7.3 diesel.
i have a 1995 ford van now that returns 28 mpg at 100 km/hr (7.3 powersmoke) and is an absolute beast for pulling... this is as good as you will get with a 60 series (or damn close)...
cheers

I can't see how a 7.3 litre V8 diesel can have the same milage as a 3.4 litre diesel. I just bought a 5.9l Cummins, and on a 120 litre tank it can go around 800km, my very unaerodynamic BJ42 can go around 500 to 600km on a 60 litre tank. I know the difference isn't much, but it all adds up in the end. If you don't need to tow your boat, go with the smaller diesel as a daily driver.
Just my opinion. But then again if you want fuel econemy, go with a diesel VW rabbit! All in what you need (or want) the vehicle for I guess.
Cheers,

the engien doesn't need to work to move the unit down the road...
i have heard nightmares milage but i owned the truck for a few years and the milage was constant. the vani have had 4000 km now and the milage is confirmed and constant...
a 2.4 gets worse milage than a HDt go figure...

Yeah, I guess, I noticed this also, I can cruise all day in 6th gear at 120km/hr in my cummins, and am to the floor in 4th at 50-100km/hr (depending on up hill or down hill) in my 42. Hope a turbo on the 3B will help me out in this department.

ive got my eyes on a different bj70 that is for sale for a reasonable price.

inspire me. why is a bj70 better than a diesel minitruck.

JDM JDM blah blah blah. You guys crack me up. What if he's willing to put a couple days and a few dollars to fix the frame and body in a DIY way ? Even a rustbucket will cruise a long happy drive. If its not pretty and shiny doesn't mean it doesn't work and has no life left in it.

As Bill Walton would say, I concur. Reading this forum, I've noticed that some of those shiny, "mint" JDMs have had a helluva lot more problems over the past two years than my ole Canadian BJ70. Guess I'm just lucky.:D Buy cheap and drive it till it drops ain't sexy, but it's the most frugal way to go. A 70 is a much more comfortable to drive than a 40, gets twice the mileage and is every bit as tough. Go for it kore!

umm, a mini can kick a 70s ass off road. a mini truck can carry a load, a mini truck is usually better on fuel, a mini doesn't have the power or the passenger room inside...
nice toss up...

my mini doesnt have a/c, doesn't even have a tach, and is very cramped for me at 6'1"
oh my im gonna have to buy a 70 and keep the mini truck.

No one ever put "mini" in front of a landcruiser;)

Its true Hilux can hold its own offroad with a landcruiser but the cruiser is a heavier duty vehicle.
Its body will handle the rough roads longer.
Alas the new cruisers are now built similar to a "minitruck"(god I hate that term:mad:)
How about some pics of these bargains you keep finding. Some of the other Canadians may know the history.

well i saw an add for a bj70 for 2500 last night, left a few message on the sellers voicemail. i call him this morning and he told me someone was looking at it at around 11 and i should call back at around 2. so i called back and it was sold. pretty lame, i wanted that cruiser.

why is that pretty lame?

it is a first come first serve society, maybe the guy heard from a buddy about the rig going up for sale? who knows the story for sure other than the seller and the buyer...

when i used to sell CDM cruisers it would often happen where a guy will phone to come look at it and when he hung up another would call. if the appointment was at 11 am then the second guy got first dibs after 11...
to me it is just fair.

yeah i know how it works
im just pissed off because i have cruiser envy
