Educate me on the starter thing? Are they just likely to go out over 100k? Mines got 116k now so might be something I need to replace preemptively?

Starter, water pump and radiator tend to fail between 6-8 years old...mileage can vary.

Ah ok , I'm running a '13 model so I guess I'll put it off another year maybe. Thanks!

It’s not an exact science... :) But I’d be surprised if you were due already...but if you are in the 100k range, I’d consider swapping.

It's time. There's tons of anecdotal evidence that shows failure consistently in this mileage range. You're very much in that failure window.

You're going to have the spend the money within the next 1-2 years. Might as well spend it proactively and at your convenience rather than the other way around...along with "incident tax".

Yee Haw no guts no glory!! Mark you have cajones of steel my friend, not to mention the gratuitous tire shot. Looking forward to the finished product. Congrats.

Heh. Thanks.

It’s funny tho.,, Me wifey came out with a nervous look on her face and asked, “How did you know how to do this stuff?”

Answer— “I didn’t...but YouTube and instructions help.” :hillbilly: Not sure that made her any less nervous... hehe

I figure I could either pay some dude $400+ and HE looks up stuff on YouTube (or maybe screws it up)...or I take that money and add some new tools that make it easier & that become part of my workbench. So...I got a Milwaukee M18 Hacksall, step bits, blades, Hole saw, Cobalt drillbits and various other doo-dad’s out of this deal... :) I’ve been slowly replacing an aging Dewalt system with Milwaukee, so little projects like these make for good excuses to add on.

But ya, it’s always a bit unnerving cutting holes in shiny, expensive stuff. 😳😬 I’m no mechanic either...but this is the kind of thinking I can do since it mostly just needs a bit of thought & care...rather than requiring deep mechanical knowledge (which I do not have).

From what I can see, the starter has a near 100% failure rate on ALL 2008-2015 trucks once you get in the 120k+ range. Disappointing, but it is what it is and the part has been redesigned. Wish it wasn't so poorly located and difficult to access. The starter is the worst design in the 200, followed by the resonator.

You just have made to most valid statement I have heard today about watching someone else. Two comments though 1. did you really say "Hold my chocolate milk and watch this" 2. you're not really going to install all your new tools/doo-dads into Bubba are you?

For the starter is it better to go OEM or is there a better aftermarket one?

For a starter to go out at 120 k it is not a very good starter. That is pathetic. My dodge 400k and still going, my jeep near 200k and still good.

Gotcha... I'll go ahead and put it on the list of things to do. Thanks everyone!

PS - next question is whether to get the $400 OEM Toyota part or get a Denso or other reman unit for a lot cheaper? I only care about reliability, not cost on this one.

I just replaced mine I'd definitely recommend the new OEM revised starter, part# 28100 – 0S050 its a tad smaller and fits better. Its not so tight to the manifold. Its not a job you wanna do very often so IMO if the quality OEM replacement gets it another 130K its worth it. Here is a side by side comparison from another thread.

Difference is we don't need a resonator but we do need a starter. Even though the mileage figures appears to be close the actual number of starting cycles may vary widely which would be the contributing factor to failure IMHO. Really no way to track this?

Agree the breakdown seems to be just in the solenoid and from the starting cycles the rest of the starter was in great condition in my case. Also the pigtail on mine crumbled to pieces when I attempted to remove it likely because of the heat it gets there. Most could probably just replace the solenoid and get many more miles of the starter but being the new version is smaller and better in all areas and because its such a bear of a job I wouldn't waste my time on just replacing the solenoid. If you are one of those don't mind the PITA job to get it in and out the OEM solenoid is about $100.

What resonator? :hillbilly:

And ya. No obvious way to track start cycles... Would be interesting if the computer tracks this somewhere... I had a camera that tracked shutter activations over the life of the camera...so who knows. Maybe Toyota records this on the chip...

I weighed my 2016 pretty loaded with 40 gallons of fuel and the RTT on. It was at 8060#s. I would imagine with my wife and the rest of our gear and provisions we are at 8500#s.

Do you happen to know when the revision came out, and if they started putting the revised version in the newer LC200's?

@indycole inspired large holes in fender...done.
And...Tada...

First wheeling trip with snorkel...?
