What did you think of the FJ?

Fair enough I always like to hear other opinions I just usually disagree with them pretty hard. As for my Pig my dad and I worked on it today and stil not running. It appears that the carb is dumpign a lot of extra gas into the engine. When I would stop trying to crank it and let the engine sit you could look in the carb window and see that the float had dropped and the gas had drained into the engine which it shouldnt do. Also my battery keeps dying so something is hot somewhere and continually killing my battery. Its just a pain. I'll be back for the Jan 1 weekend and anytime after hat I would be thrilled to have you come help me out Marshal just let me know when is good for you.

Ok thats cool, when is Davids Help a Member weekend? Not that same weekend is it. I want to do my PS before tellico too if possible.

I agree on some points with the both of you guys. No, I would not take a 100 series or a new FJ cruiser out to Mtn Estates, cause sure as hell the mid to long wheel baser's get thrashed out there. With looking at the new FJ cruiser I saw several places that just "stuck out", and with me in the drivers seat, would get totally demolished. I like the FJC, but I'm not in the market for a new car. Hell I can barely afford gas for my 62 right now. Speaking of, I love to wheel and I love to wheel in my wagon. When I bought my 62 I had/have all the intentions to wheel the tar outta it. Why? because I know it can handle the abuse and it gives me somthing to learn on and fix. But now, my wagon won't see the trail again until I get the brakes fixed, some sliders, new tires, and a lift. I just don't see myself wrecking what i love to drive. It tore me up when i got that rocker damage at tellico, and it set me back. Now I have to spend money on fixing rocker dents instead of the new paint job that it desperately needs( and no, I'm not just going to "rattle can it")

Anyway so if you've got money......just get a beater cruiser so you can drive on and off road with class.

Matt spring for some good 1" tube and a 6 pack and come over to Clemson we'll sit around one sat or sun and build you some good sliders.

Interesting thread I ran across while trying to find out how to recover from frying something in my FJC.

It'd be interesting to know what peoples reactions are now after seeing them around for a while. And wheeling with them.

I being one of the idiots that spent $30k (well, will by the time I'm finished) on something to abuse in the woods feel like it's money well spent.

It's a fierce wheeler and a good all-around vehicle.
How has it proven out from the POV of the long-time cruiserheads out there?

The aftermarket doo dads and whatchamacallits have done wonders for the FJ. I haven't personally wheeled with it yet( but here in a few weeks I'm sure I'll get a taste) so I haven't really formed an opinion on it. However I'm sure its a badass on the trail, or other wise it wouldn't be such a hit.

Looks like you are not alone. I still think most people will say one thing and do another.

X2 and then some.
The quoted thread was about taking something nice and then bashing it on the trails.
When I bought my FJ I figured I'd so some light wheeling, enjoy my DD, keep it stock. I made a lot of talk about not messing up its sweet drivability for the street. I had thoughts of re-selling it when I retire abroad.

Then I went to Uwharrie.

First trail was Daniel. By the time we got to the top I was a different person. Every heard of endorphin junkies?
By the end of the next day my running boards were abolutely trashed. Well I was going to replace them anyway. Protect my investment. Already had AllPros on order in fact.

Then I went to Tellico.
By the end of nine hours of wheeling with Tellico Rob for a spotter I was hopelessly hooked. Pinstripes all over the sides. Sprung rear end so now the plastic on one side is screwed on. Leaking rear shock. Untold abuse underneath. Cracked tail light from almost flopping her.
So now I've got lifts on order. Have bought a winch and will buy a Demello (probably) bumper. And am considering buying tires that will make daily driving feel like taking the John Deere to work.
"Say one thing and do another"? Well . . . things change. This cruiser thing is highly addictive.

Now I've fried my electrics and ordered the wrong lift. But I still can't wait to get out there and do it some more.

Scary stuff.

What really scares me is how much of my upgrade budget is going to be eaten up by my bonehead mistake of hooking up my ATRAC hack wrong and frying something inside the brains.

Kicking himself all the way to work in his woreout old Taco backup vehicle.

I have wheeled with FJCruisers more than most and have spotted them over a lot of tough terrain. They perform very well offroad. I have a LWB (I would take it to Mt Estates) and aside from the occassional whoops on Schoolbus :) it has been great.

FJCs really are wheelers, they can do a lot. I don't think Troll has a rational argument in his idiot theory since you can't objectively call someone an idiot. Moron? I think they have tests for that :).

Bill when I was refering to idiots I meant those that go out and buy something and turn it into a rasin. Yours is far from that. Dents and dings give cruisers character.

Dan have you been to MTN Estates? I don't think I've ever seen a vehicle that has gone in there and not come out with damage. It's a meat grinder. There is something to be said for driving down a trail using the side of your vehicle as the skid plate.

I have never been, I would go though. :)

I have used the side of the cado as a skidplate many many times. weeee

No offense. Often I am an idiot. If I can keep it below 49% of the time I'm satified.
The point I was trying to make is how much fun this sport is. Downright addictive.
And the same X2 for the vehicles.
If I had any idea I'd have bought a beater and trailed heck out of it years ago. I can fully understand how you guys end up with 2, 3, 5 and more of these things.
I like every model for one reason or another.
But since I started late and only have one, might as well have ALL the bells and whistles.
There is something to be said for trailing through the dust, hot, cold, ice or snow with good AC/heat, power windows and a killer nine speaker stereo lol.

Traction control, e-locker, ABS, VSC for the fast bits. You get what you pay for.
Did I mention killer stereo with iPod plug and 6pack CD/MP3 changer?

I love my FJ. She almost seems to thrive under the abuse.

I am still on the fence with the FJC. mostly from the aspect of styling. I guess when I heard it was coming out, I expecting a retro 40. So with that out of the mix, I do like the FJC. I was very impressed with the three that came to the N vs S at uwharrie. Bill and Jerry drove the hell out of his and made a couple of the tougher sections look easy. I have a few dislikes on the vehicle, but you have that with about every ride on the market. All in all I am impressed with what it can do, but I don't think I would personally buy one. At least not yet anyway.

Eric - to be honest, that is part of the appeal to me, that it is uniquely "fugly". I don't mean that in a negative way, just that so many can't stand the way it looks and I'm good with that. Many don't like the rear suicide doors not because they aren't functional, just that they are not conventional. Who else is going to buy a flaming yellow thing that looks like it other than someone like me. When my wife first saw it she said that she could deal with it as long as I didn't want the yellow one....yeah right!

What gets me is the venom that so many (not you) have against the FJC. That was one thing that impressed me with you guys, even if there was any negativity toward the FJC's, I never felt if from anyone in the group. But, standing in the crowd on "Kodak" rock, hearing the whispers and jeers wanting to see some "FJ Cruiser carnage" with them not knowing I was the driver of one of them.

And, that just makes it more appealing to me, to prove that it can perform beyond what most expect it to be able to do. And a great part of that is learning how to drive it, which I'm working on my skills as well as the FJC's capability. Some act like it is a RAV4 or Liberty and can't make it over a speed bump at the mall. All I know, like Bill, I'm having fun and enjoy being on the trail with it. That's all that counts in my book...

Man I couldn't agree more. We had so much fun with you guys and watching how your confidence grew as the day wore on. I'm sure it will only get better too. Just think how it will be two years from now when you know every little detail of the FJC and what it'll do. You'll make some of us look bad with how easy the obstacles are. I don't have any ill will towards the FJC. I just wish toyota would bring back a 40 styled vehicle. I would get in line today. :D
