They have to appraise it separately? Not what you paid for it on a Bill of Sale?

That sounds like excessive taxation. Should only be taxable on what you paid for it.

Well, I think it's worth a million dollars if I have to insure or sell it, but only $1 if I'm going to title it.

As feld posted, they don't give a s*** what you paid. And since it the jdm's rigs don't have vins in the us sense they can't just blue book them.

If the rigs a roach you can use an affidavit of value to show issues. I am doing that with this. Front end rebuild. Tires. Transmission. I hoping to pay taxes on 15k. And it's 10% tax.

What was it like working with Japanese Classics? I'm always ogling their inventory.
Yeah I've been lurking their inventory for a while, still keeping an eye out on what R34 prices are looking like when they're legal. It was pretty smooth, I'm in FL so everything was by mail or over the phone. But I want to say the whole process of me contacting them, getting the funds and it arriving in FL was just a little over a week.

Yeah I dreamed of R34 in my life but seeing that Type R are going to be 6 figure ( over a quarter million) makes me realize that isn't going to happen. I'll keep saving for the GTR that the US actually got the R35 which are still under 6 figures.

Put a new 1HDT in mine for Christmas, now I’ve got to put in the fancy gullwing window I got from the group buy.

To the second part, no idea.

Washington requires me to get it appraised at a dealer and submit the paperwork in order for them to assess taxes.

I bought mine already titled and private party.

But first I had to wait for the title from the kid I bought it from. That took a few weeks. Then it was in the shop getting a new trans, that was another week. Now it's the holidays. So it'll be next year before anything happens.

They have waived the dol's fines for being late with doing the paperwork

Excessive taxation? Sounds like you're familiar with WA State! With no income tax here the government finds any way they can to increase other taxes.

Private party bills of sale don't mean a lot here when it comes to value. The state will assess the greater of book value or what you paid and tax that number. If you have an unusual vehicle, you have to get it appraised. It's one of the reasons I made sure I titled my LX as soon as I bought it for $500 with a knocking engine and a moldy interior. Really hard to argue it wasn't scrap back then.

Wow what a hassle @Dusten

I've never heard of someone having such a challenge in Washington state. Are they considering it an import or an in state sale. Maybe that's the difference?

I know a few talk about excess taxation but a sales tax is far better than a mandatory of the top state income tax that now, you can no longer deduct from federal income tax anymore. Places like Idaho and Oregon and Montana tax you on every thing you make. And you still get property tax and some sales tax. Forget that.

Makes a big difference for those who like to save....or only spend money on one hobby, like their truck 😉

Some fun at the beach with the fam

I bought mine in Canada, brought it over on the ferry, went through customs, then to the DMV ,inside of 6 hours of being in Washington state it was titled and registered . The appraisal thing might be a county specific thing, or my DMV just didn’t care, but coming up on 4 years without issue

Not sure. They said
"We need an appraisal on dealer letter head with a business card from the dealer"

Mines already imported and titled. This is just for sales tax purposes.

Try a different DMV, I paid import tax at the border and sales tax at the DMV. Did you buy it from a dealer?

Yep, I know. Curious how it’s being used. Love the concept.
Dudes over in the 12v subforum helped me out with how to wire it. I just summarized my setup before we left for this trip if you head over and look it up in that forum (still have a few tweaks that need to be done). It goes to a Victron solar controller which feeds a 100aH LFP battery.

I've tried 3. It's because they can't assess value. No, it was private party which is the issue.
