I am also very interested in how it turns out. I REALLY want to have a diesel land cruiser and if I had had more money I would have done the MB swap instead of replace the 283 that was worn out. I still plan on converting my "Bucket" into a diesel someday and would be very interested in how your's turns out.
I've got an MB OM617A in the '79 I just bought, it's currently mated to a H42 and split case out of an FJ60 with the stock 3:73 gears. After having it a few weeks I can tell you this, I'm re-gearing to 4:11s to help the bottom end. The gears are too tall through first and second, this motor has a power curve like a gasser and gets better as you spool up the turbo. It's not at all like the tractor torque grunt of the F/2F, but then again it's happy as can be running 70-75 on the freeway all day. Mine came with a new H55, I'm thinking that with the lower gears and overdrive will be perfect (suggested by Luke at 4x4Labs).
Yours should be sweet with the mini truck 5-speed and early axles Missrenaissance
Huh... I had never thought about that engine. I haven't heard many good things about them though mostly just low power for a fullsize diesel. Interesting... it will be a while no matter what as I JUST put a rebuilt engine in to replace the tired old one.
Ahhh diesels... I like many of us would love to go there, but for now, I'm gassin it with my fuel injected SBC. Some day. I've got my eye on a nice looking old Mercedes down the street that is OM617 equipped. Waiting for that for sale sign....
In the meantime I have finally taken a couple pictures of the folding steps I installed on the pig in hopes that the kids who sleep up on top won't destroy my work when they climb up there. These things were only $6 each. Leave it to a firefighter to 'discover' something that has been under his nose for years.... These are through bolted and hold my 240lbs just fine as well.
Nice, those are slick. I have been thinking about putting some on the rear corners of my 40 for help getting into the back while packing it for camping.

I just searched for "small folding steps" on line and found them after a while. I made my own gaskets between the body and the step from old rubber floormats.
Found a good looking piece of cardboard for in front of the radiator, so I put it there. Found a good looking piece of hose that fit the PCV to carb insulator spot, so I put that there. Spent the rest of the day getting the big-cap dizzy timed right...had it on and running, but never to spec. Today I got it timed to spec. Had to clock & un-clock several times. Finally figured it out.
Not a darn thing. Summer was a fiasco, and winter will be mostly hunting in my spare time. That is if I don't get bombarded with tons of research, writing papers, and studying this quarter.
Another pig gets mini truck PS! I finally got all the stuff to finish this. What a difference. Wow! I got a bracket from Rock Lobster via JT Outfitters. Used a Saginaw pump. Had to learn the hard way all about bleeding the air out of the lines, but in the end, it's quiet clean and not leaking. I can actually turn my wheels in the driveway with one finger. Too cool!
Pighead, what's with the carboard? Is it getting cold there now? Tahoe is finally below 40 in the AM, but Sac was still around 100 last week! I'm guessing you don't miss that...
Stew:
Great job! Mini-truck power steering, Ranger overdrives, SBC conversions. We'll have to get out "twins" together sometime.
May actually take mine on the road to SoCal at Thanksgiving...but only if I get the bucket seats installed first. Did that drive on a bench seat delivering my first Pig to its new owner and am not anxious to repeat the experience.

Yeah, my leg falls asleep just thinking about that drive...
I did have to cut off about 3/4 inch from the steering shaft... you didn't tell us you had to do THAT on yours . The grinder made that cut for me. I felt I still had plenty of bite left over on the rest of the shaft inside that slip joint.
Did not need to cut my steering shaft at all. Fit was tight but still left adequate movement on the splines at either end of the mini-shaft between the column and the box. As I mentioned, we did have to pull it back apart and service the u-joints on that shaft, which were so gummed up they barely moved. May be some slight difference between the Iron Pig Offroad mount I used and the Rock Lobster mount from JTO.

Good point and quite likely. Did you use ATF fluid? The maiden voyage was a success... just a wee bit o' weeping to deal with at the pump HP line. No heat. No squealing.
