What Did You Do To Your Diesel Today (WDYDTYDT)

That is very cool! And the plastic surgery was amazing. Good for you for perservering.

Question: I see you have a nice intercooler on that FT. DId you happen to measure before and after temperatures? The Omani diesel 80 has an FT in it and I no matter how hard I punch it (weak clutch allowing; @cruisermatt just took it in for a HD clutch and a new steering box) I can not get the temp gauge to go over about 1/5 from the bottom and the EGT stays nice and cool.

The FT and T seem to be very cool running.
John, it really depends on how much fuel you allow in, and how big the intercooler and how restrictive is the exhaust. My 80 never goes over 850F but the troopy is running with much more fuel in the IP and a much smaller intercooler so I can get it to 1050F on a steep long hill pushing it in 5th at 70 mph. All temps are pre-turbo.

By the way the FT runs cooler than the T from my experience. Not much. And they all can use an intercooler. I’ve seen exhaust manifolds cracked on engines that I got.

@ofer bruhis I have had 2 middle eastern land cruisers and as you said. I have no sympathy for any mechanics who worked like this. Those poor trucks lived a very hard life. It took a lot to get the mechanicals back to useable. My friend @Chamba is going thru his own nightmare now with “lipstick on a pig” vehicle or “ silk purse out of a sows ear”. Which ever makes the most sense. After reading SO MANY horror stories, unless I actually visit the vehicle before purchase, I won’t go near it. Unless no matter what, it’s an awesome deal 😉

The tipping point has really shifted
The 1FZ-F to 1HZ with safari industrial turbo (mild) troopy project has been beset with overheat issues despite oil cooler and top mount intercooler. Albeit in the heat of Dubai.

We converted water to air into air to air on a 62 with a 1HDT and dropped 150F on EGT. I’m a fan of the least complicated solution and air to air is passive. Not much that can go wrong. And much easier to install. Hot environment definitely does not help EGT. 🙂

One of my UAE trucks was so worn the large splines in the driveshaft were completely stripped. It was as if the hubs were unlocked BUT AT THE SLIP JOINT. I’ve had drain plugs with chunks of steel welded on them because they were so stripped and round, there was no way to remove them. Not anything symmetrical…chunks!

Your truck is magnificent…as a vintage guy…I can really appreciate what you’ve gone thru..had several rust buckets over my life

Haven't seen this before but this is setup is cool. Unfortunately, I think it would take more fabrication work than I'm currently capable of.

How about putting in the setup typically used with the 1HZ--the filter / primer pump in series with the pre-filter. I think they are all still available.
Just got back to Dubai. Here is the setup I was thinking of:

Speaking of just getting back to Dubai...

It was hot and muggy in Florida. It is hotter and muggier here. For some reason I had convinced myself that it would be about the same.

So Mister Blue the 105 is in storage awaiting installation of the H series transmission. My daily for the moment is the 1994 troopy (now with turbo diesel power. The engine bay is a bit crowded.

But we have quite a bit to try to manage things. Couple of electric fans in the front, an oil cooler with forced ventilation, intercooler (although what good it is going to do I don't know in this weather. Today in Dubai was 104F 40C. And of course, the red/orange viscous fan clutch.

I had put a cheapo battery cut off on the truck but the guys did not use it so it has been over 3 months of sitting. I was really curious about how hard it was going to be to start her up.

The truck will be getting a real work out heat-wise during the next few days. I think I am going to try to add some temperature sensors.

This looks similar to the fuel filter housing I upgraded to on my Kzj78. I believe there was an unofficial winter package for the 70 series Prado and part of it was a fuel filter housing with a heating element in it.

I took the troopy out for a little drive today in the summer heat of Dubai. Temp gauge was steady at just slightly under half way on the OEM meter (which I don't particularly put a lot of faith in). I am seriously thinking of adding some semi-calibrated temp sensors to the truck.

The aircon was a little weak. Kept me from being very uncomfortable but it was not quite up to the job. The truck has a PA15 (same unit as the one that was on the Omani diesel 80).

There is no space to put a larger PA17 in because of the downpipe off the air cleaner.

It is not touching but it is only a couple of mm away.

I did touch the cold side of the compressor after I stopped and it was pretty hot. Maybe I just need to check the coolant pressure.

Other than that the troopy nice driver with a new steering box, fresh engine, fresh transmission and both axels and brakes. Pretty much a new truck. The suspension is still feels like a lumber truck, but other than that and the weak AC it was a real pleasure to drive. Tight steering and good enough power.

Looking for advice on startup issues with a 2H. I've been following this example and with the glow plugs removed I can get puffs of fuel shooting out when the engine cranks. However, with the glow plugs in and glow plug rail installed it only cranks, and semi slowly at that. It's got a new battery with 950 CCA. I put new rubber fuel lines all the way back to the tank and I'm maintaining solid pressure at the hand pump.

The wiring harness near the alternator gets a little warm, so there might be a short in that bundle. Other than that I'm not sure what else to try.

How wonderful that you are doing this with your son! Beautiful!

We have a pickup in Florida with a very tired 1HZ that really does not want to start unless gently coaxed. BADLY in need of a rebuild. My daily at the moment is a 1994 Troopy with a fresh 1HZ that starts after a quarter rotation. I was not able to watch your whole video at the moment, but did want to share that.
