Yeah, the water temp gauge. It just slowly goes up and down then shoots up into the red although the engine is not overheating. Water temp is around 200 degrees and that is in Texas heat.
I had the same issue on a previous Cruiser. Fairly sure it's a grounding issue but despite repeated efforts, we could never track it down.

Its called temperature spike, its electrical issue. Will happen more often when you have full fuel tank, no idea why. And usually both fuel and temp needles spike at the same time.
On old gauge I cleaned the contacts at the incorporated voltage regulator, but that threw out of range the whole reading.

You can attempt to clean the contacts. Best would be an aftermarket pid reader. I have even 6-7 deg celsius difference in coolant temperature on the aftermarket gauge, without the dash needle moving much.

also, do a search on mud on "temperature spike".

That is exactly the issue I am having. At times when I am driving down the freeway, both the fuel and temp needles will spike all the way up then slowly go down. Freaked me out at first. Thank you for your input as I wasn't sure what the issue was called.

My '85 BJ70 did it all the time. Scares the crap out of you at first :D
I never figured it out, and eventually quit caring.

Mine never "pegged" for more than 5-10 seconds before it returned to the normal position.

Got my HZJ73 back together after replacing some sheetmetal and new paint.Even installed new seats and new wheels. Now only wait a week or 2 on that softtop to get here.

Ooh that first brush scratch is gonna hurt :p
looks great though joekatana.

Gorgeous. Are you going to drive it? I see it's not in a museum that's a great thing. You will get lots of well deserved attention. Enjoy

I just finished doing the water pump, rad hoses, timing belt kit, and fan/alternator belt on my 1HZ. Its about 10 years since I have done this and I forgot what a time consuming job it is. I either lost the timing belt idler spring from the kit or they forgot to put it in ,so I have another one coming from Sydney. The old one was just slightly out of spec, 72.7mm vs 73mm.
I just have water in it at the moment, I will drive around for a few days and drain it again and refill it to get all of the green coolant out before I add the Toyota Red coolant.

When I fit the new spring I will also take the valve cover off and torque the cam shaft bolt up to 72 lbs. I put the valve cover on before I torqued the bolt. I managed to get it reasonably tight by jamming something in the #2 camshaft pulley to stop it turning, but having a spanner on the camshaft hex is the proper way to do it.

I used a Japanese made GMB branded pump. A few years back I wouldn't have touched an aftermarket pump but they have improved the quality of them and they are about $50 vs Toyota's $200+ pump.
The timing belt had probably been on there for 10 years or more but only did 75000klms I think. The PO only did low klms , only 4000 in the last 4 years he owned it.
I used a Nasco timing belt and idler kit, Bosch alt/aircon belts and Mackay hoses.

In anticipation of an upcoming road trip, I installed my rear seats.

For those of you that are driving either SWB or MWB Cruisers, this photo might be confusing. What you're seeing is actual cargo space and the photo wasn't altered to make it look bigger.

Was it altered to make it look like you wheel your rig? I've done the same to mine;)

Details on the Powertank mount? I'm assuming it's a Rob Smith special?

The recovery kit and tool bag is simply a cardboard mockup. The Powertank bracket was indeed modified by Rob.
(I can provide photos if requested)
