What's your est. max range? How much did you pick it up for?

cobra

cobra 148

wait a mo--I have an unused cobra148--only taken out of the box to look at it

prolly can find the firestick to go with it

pm if you are interested I cant use it in the UK

I have several single side band CB's of various makes.

Side band is the way to go.

Also, anyone know of any good linear amplifiers for CB and SSB?

(Not that I would ever use one.)

The small Uniden radios are good stuff, compact, mount anywhere and durable. I run the PRO-520XL, check the Uniden site, they often have referb radios at good prices.

My 40 is very noisy electrically; the Cobra 18 I put in first picked up so much alternator whine that it was unusable. Sold it and put in a Uniden 78, that works great with no alternator noise at all. Much better shielded than the Cobra.

you are not going to get that much range from a cb. if you want something good then expect to spend some money for instance i have a 10 meter radio that has the 11 meter chanels[cb] installed and i have a 400 watt linear and on a good day on cb i can get anywhere around 25 to 50 miles. on a stock thats tweeked expect about 5 or less miles and thats BEING LUCKY

Well, 5 miles is all I would need anyway. All we have around here is mountains to block signals any more that 5 mi.

cb

Have you got any 40 bits and pieces laying around?

I need things like windshield hood brackets, window seals, hardtop seals, bumperettes, some aux lighting etc what have U?

I dont need a CB I cant use for the next 5 years

you could use a quality SSB radio, PM me ;)

"The Cobra 148GTL is a serious 40 channel SSB-Single Sideband CB radio that is loaded features. The dynamike boost and 12 watts of SSB RF power combine to give you the maximum legal range. And the dual conversion receiver means you will be able to hear them. You also get an RF Gain control, Automatic Noise Limiter, Switchable Noise Blanker and 3 position Tone Switch. Other refinements include: Illuminated S/RF/SWR meter, Dimmer, two color RX/TX LED and front panel mic connection. This is a beefy radio geared towards the professional user."

well if thats all you want then get whatever fits they are all the same watts except for sideband.

Well the range wasn't a huge issue, though a couple of guys in my wheeling club complained that theirs wouldn't be very useful after a range of 1 mi or more. I'm sure there may be something more to it than the radio though.

bsmith123 - I don't have any parts at this time to trade. I appreciate the offer for the radio, but I'm sure the shipping from the UK would be expensive. I'll PM you though

I have a hand-held Cobra WST 75

reach is o.k., not great

:meh: IMO the best radio for trails:any VHF or UHF..but they are $$ ,then you have to use it on NO license frequencies< unless all your friends have amateur license, but who cares on the woods? i know but if you hit a repeater then its the issue.

We use cb radios on the trail cos they are cheap, not everyone want to spend $ on something that we use it 2 times a month, can get wet with rain,mud,dust.... i paid $10.00 on ebay for my uniden pro 520...normally we use it for keep the convoy together on the road, but the range its..%$#@!:D

Thank you sir!

I have my Ham license and have a Yaesu quad band 2M/10m etc but as others have said not everyone in the club here wants to shell out the coin for that. As such, I run this Cobra, 29 WX NW LTD:

29 WX NW ST Classic CB with NOAA Weather and NightWatch from Cobra=

The Cobra is a good 11m unit, guys run alot of other stuff too but make NO mistake, there is absolutely no comparison between the range of my Yaesu and the Cobra and the sound quality, the Yaesu is crisp and clear on 2M where as the Cobra CB/11M is intelligible but really scratchy by comparison. It is a problem with CBs not just Cobra. To be fair the CB works for it's intended use, to keep a convoy together and informed all of which should be taking place within a 1-2 mile radius. If you guys are running in big country and are liable to be scattered out over a wide range I would get a club project going to get as many guys their entry level Ham license as possible and try and find a good deal on some used 2M band radios. Several TLC clubs are doing it. You guys will never look back and regret it.
Thanks,
John

That's good to know. Our club has just gotten into the Northern Maine Woods Territory where it is very desolate. Comparable to some places in Alaska. Now with that said, couldn't a regular CB be amplified for greater range? Could a military SINGARS radio antenna be used/ modified to work for extra range?
