Wet Floor, please help (1 Viewer)

Here is what I found out so far. My driveway is sloped and I back my TLC with the front lower than the back and when it rains I always get the wet headliner and wet floor. Today I backed it in opened the sunroof and poured at least one gallon of water into the sunroof drains and nothing came out at all and I when I tapped on the rockers I could tell they were filling up. After a while the drain backed up all the way to the sunroof and I stopped. The drains are definitely there as shown in the previous post. The DS is easy to see however the PS is hidden behind the cat heat shield. I ran a tie wrap end up the drains and I found all of the water. If the rockers are plugged it will backup all the way to the sunroof, then the rockers spill out onto the carpet for mine mostly the ds since the TLC leans that way in the driveway. Snaking some sting trimmer line down the drains can’t hurt. You know you are all the way down when you hear it tapping the rocker. Has anyone routed these drains out of the rockers and through the firewall or fender like they are in the back? My only concern now is how much rust and corrosion is in my rockers with all that water trapped in them. I just bought it and have no idea how long they were plugged. It’s going to rain hard for the next few days I’ll let you know how I made out. I still have to fix the seal on the sunroof either new glass or adjust the tracks. My glass sat about a ¼ until I added washers to shims on the roof it helped but it’s not perfect. Good luck! I had no idea that 80’s are such fish bowls.

The trick I did to clean the drains in the front of the 92 that was haveing the leak at the DS "A" post was I took a small funnel and put the small end on the drain hole then took a shop Vac and stuck it into the big end and it sounded like I stucked a mouse out with a thud . I did this for a few times till it sounded like the vac was breathing a little better . Where the wife had to park for work there are alot of the pine trees with the 3" needles and they were cloging up the drains as they were long and thin and they were also clogging up the front air intake between the hood and windsheild.
I did this on both front drains .
I then took the garden hose and ran alot of water down each side to check flow.

Its been fine since

The headliner is dropped and here are some pics of the area that water drain into when put on the closed sunroof. I will take wet pics tomorrow. All drains seem to be clear and I have removed the front rocker panel drain as suggested for now. Still leaks into this spot.

on your second picture there it almost looks like the sunroof pan is cracked, does it look cracked in person? that could be your leak,

Sounds like you have the same problem as me - worn rails (actually, I'm told it is the cables that are worn, but they are integrated into the rails, so rail replacement is required). I was also told there should be no "play" in the sunroof - so when closed, it shouldn't be able to move upward at all.

My is (hopefullY) being repaired tomorrow evening, so I'll let you know Thursday how much "play" is present after the repair. Currently, mine is pretty much exactly like your's - definately 1/8" and maybe up to 1/4"

Good luck.

News???

I did not have any overflow aroud the sunroof opening or water on the DS carpet.

reviving this as the PS side is now wet... not sure what is going on... grrrrrrrrrrr

I think this explain why it sounds like I have an aquarium in my DS door!

I've been having sort of the same problem. After it rains, I can hear water sloshing around near my feet when I stop and accelerate. I never could figure out what it was, however I never really investigated. (I was lucky that no water got into the interior of the car.

I'm going to look at those drain slits tomorrow and hopefully I can solve my problem.

Splash!

Yikes this leak thing is a "hot topic"I tried to read all the replys to avoid redudancy but here goes MAKE SURE THE DRIAN TUBE DID NOT COME LOOSE FROM THE FANGES on the sunroof tray especially after vigourous cleaning out which could pull one off.
It is easy enough to remove the trim&headliner near the corners of the sunroof and see if the hose is clamped on securely

Here's my story it s sad but true... (94 145k)
last year I heard something rolling around over my heard when drivig
Eventually I was treated to my personnal"niagra falls" when I got in the truck on a torrential day! It litterally poured on my head having pooled in the waterproof headliner>I did all the "duh"cleanouts could but still would fail the hose test every time water just came on in and poured out by the PS door
I decided to pull the whole sunroof :(people this is a bitch be sure to have a bottle of vodka handy) and after much removing of headliner and being lucky not to break anything pulling the HUGE akward thing out a little acorn was in the DS rear drain hole. Obviously if you do the assembled cleanout with a probe the little sucker just moves over a tee and happily rolls back into the hole to continue it s feindish agenda till sussed.
The moral here is never ever leave the roof half open under a tree: stuff will fall on it and roll right into the SR pan and then you re toast
Peace

Dan,
Do you think compressed air into the outlet side of the drain would have forced that acorn to blow out? (20-20 hindsight of course.)

No way the air coulda worked it was almost the perfect setup for doom ....
No matter what the little guys rolls back into the drain hole unless pulverized
I guess maybe if I had an endoscope I coulda looked way back in there without R&R and used a grabby tool to extract.....sigh

No more wet floor

First time poster, but should make a statement of thanks for the many issues that I have been able to resolve due to the posts on this site.

After reading through all of the posts on wet floors and following all of the suggestions I had the cleanest sunroof drain lines and rocker panel drains in town but still had water on the floor after every hard rain.

I could never find any indication that water was coming from anywhere under the dash.

Frustrated I finally got creative and recreated a hard rain storm with a couple water hoses strategically positioned on the roof and hood and positioned several lights around under the dash. Then with all of the doors closed and positioning myself ackwardly upside down between the drivers seat and steering wheel I waited, and waited and waited until finally the problem was revealed.

In my case, the rubber seal at the rear of the hood was worn enough that upon a hard rain water was building up in the gap between the hood and body then flowing over the seal dripping down to three wires coming from a relay that are fed through the firewall with a useless rubber gasket sealing it. The water would then travel down the wires and drip just above where my carpet began and travel down to the final resting spot that is displayed in the photos in this thread.

I don't know what is more difficult to troubleshoot water or electricity.

I can't say if this is what is causing the wet floor syndrome for everyone but after a little sylicone around those wires and the gap in the firewall no more leaks and finally after months of wet carpet my truck has its old 12 year old TLC smell and not mildew.

Thanks guys, I now feel like I am on the right track with getting my rig a little drier inside. I was having wet pass floorboard and dripping drivers grab handle.
A quick inspection this morning and it looks like some kind of undercoating was applied that sealed up the slit drains. Oddly it actually looks like on the passenger front someone tried to SEAL the drain slit with caulking! When I pulled the lowest drain plugs I probably got 1/2 cup of water or so from each side.

I did have a few questions for the Gurus.
Do the rockers have individual pockets or baffles in them?
I ask because I am curious if I need to pull all the drain plugs or just the lowest one per side(I park on a slope).

I would make sure the slits at the very bottom are open, that will drain the entire cavity, if you just pull the plugs a few inches up from the bottom it will cause standing water below that point in the bottom of the rockers and lead to corrosion.

Folks,

I have a brand new sunroof; the seal is very nice and tight. I am pretty sure NO water is leaking from my sunroof. However the rocker panel on the PS on my RHD JDM truck fills up after a good rain storm.
The truck is normally covered with a quality truck cover and is parked at a slop with the rear end higher than the nose.

Where could this water come from?

Landcrusher 80

windshield leaks are also notorious for this type of water.

Rocker Drain Slits

How many rocker panel drain slits are there? My driver side is backing up, so I took a ziptie to clear them out. I only found one slit, near the front drain plug behind the front tire. The water drains properly from the slit now. I couldn't find any other slits along the entire rocker panel, and I looked a long time.

Is there only one slit on each side? My 1993 FZJ80 underbody looks nothing like the pictures above.

Thanks!
