As promised, here are the initial pics of my soon [year like] to be African-Continent-Crosser...thats right friends, i found this little gem while cruising in the middle of the desert here in Oman delivering some little bedouin kiddies to their 'school'...i sent my friend over who speaks their speak - we tossed around some numbers - and BLAMMO - she's mine.

Don't go jumping to negative conclusions tho...i am living in the land of the $100 per month mechanic. She is presently beside herself, literally in pieces, getting a little reinforcement from our good friend steel...soon to be back on her feet with a reddish hue, ready to have nearly all her elements upgraded, replaced or added - stay tuned folks - this is going to be a smooth ride....

And how do you expect the little kids to get to school now?? I hope you have trouble sleeping at night. j/k

Very cool find.

Quite the score!

Troopys are awesome. Is it an FJ-45, or an HJ-45? As in, does it have a gasoline engine or a diesel engine?

Going to cross Africa?!?!? Awesome. I hope someday to be able to do the same.

oh, its an FJ45 all right...no such thing as diesel here...and its in Sur, not Muscat - the 45 series are king down here - you can't throw a shawarma here without hitting one....mostly pick-ups, but a few troopies - people have no love for them tho - one guy bought one i found only to cut the top off making it a quasi pick up in order to carry water for his camels...madness...

Sounds like a FJ45 rescue society is in order.

slowly but surely...

Hey there team, so 'Moza' [Banana] is still busy in surgery, but progress is in fact being made. We have put the final nail in the coffin which was body rust, including replacing the floors in the front, holes in the doors, as well as the door frame, the next step will be to repair damage to the rear hinge mounts to align the doors appropriately...you might notice some material missing from the front end of the vehicle - this is due to an engine rebuild which proved the cylinders were out of round, and instead of re-boring them to 100mm, the engine will simply be replaced with a near immaculate 2F...i was told i would be repatriated with her within two weeks, but we'll see how that goes...

stay tuned...

probably not much need for a heater there? cool find, also looks like power steering.

ya - factory power steering still works, heater will be kinda necessary when in Jordan in January, and halfway up Kilimanjaro...but i'm also going to be fabbing up an aircon unit to be fed through the heating ducts...slightly more high-priority than the heating...

almost halfway there...

so here are a few more progress pics - bodywork is coming together nicely...all the door hinge mounts needed to be remade and the doors re-hung...all is well now tho - the new 2f engine is in hand so to speak - painting this week - but the bastards removed all the windows as you can see - and notice the less than common shape what with the small pop out window - anyone have any info on where i could find the weatherstripping? or alternate ideas.....

Very nice Ian,

Looks like those blokes are doing a good job- gotta love cheap labour! Are you going to ship her back to Canada when you are done with the trip? If/when you ship her back to North America, you will find that the axles from 76-84 40 series bolt right on, so you very easily install disk brakes. The breauty of these rigs is that nearly everything from the 40 works on the troopie, so parts are relatively easy to get.

Keep the pictures coming! Are you painting the interior as well before doing all of the camper install? When do you plan to have it done for the trip?

Cheers,

Josh

In the picture with the woman standint cross-armed........

Thats the look she gives me every time my wife goes in our garage......

that look is probably shared by most FJ45-owner's wives :)

Good lookin rig.....keep up the 'annoying the wifey'!!!

haha

funny you should mention - but we agreed that we were going to drive across africa some time ago - and it was decided i would handle all matters vehicular...she does not have the built-in love of car fixing that is generally more common in males - but fortuneately for me - i have essentially got a blank cheque in terms of my attention i pay to the cruiser as all my 'effort' is for our cause....therefore: lucky me

also - i just received my waeco fridge, my hi-lift jack and my new rays engineering volk racing wheelies and bfg 265/75/16 shoes - as well as some rubber bits - the ball is officially rolling - new pics tomorrow....

Put comfortable seats in that thing otherwise wifey will complain all the way across the continent!

"Thought the drive train was loud? Most of the noise in a 45 comes from the passenger seat."

Ahhhh, so that explains the comment: I think I hear a whine coming from somewhere in your drivetrain.

As in, when the passenger has to push, because the driver forgot to fill up at the last outpost!

some more pics for your peepers...

things are coming along - still waiting on a bunch of weatherstripping and hardware being kindly put together by mike at the 'dent depot' in oaklahoma before i can finish things up...by the time this thing is done - it will have a piece of nearly every country in it...
