Viscous Coupler-where cn i get one?

@jonheld. Based on all the input, ONE of the problems is definitely a VC that isn't working right, or yes, something in the gear assembly. But it does seem pretty classically that the VC is the cause of the " kicking out on turns" ( that's the problem in question). (I did answer your post re: the problem, elsewhere. ) Although I also need a new power steering pump, as I have for years ( or so I am told)- the car doesn't have difficulty steering, or screech ( fan belt) so I don't think the "kick ou"t problem is from the power steering. Again, several bows to all you more knowledgeable people out there. I haven't tried it lately but as I recall the " kick out" problem goes away when in 4WDLow, as one would expect from a VC problem. It looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

the car stutters and wheels arent in synch, especially from a standstill, turning out or into a parking space, there is also a bump bump sound on slow turns ( might be there on faster turns, but only if slowing to a stop, im pretty sure).

Has the VC been diagnosed as the issue? It's a simple procedure that I gave you already.

yes, it has been diagnosed. But judging from the groaning sound on turns, I wouldn't be surprised if the power steering pump has failed. Could that be from the VC problem? There is a thudding sound too, along with the " drive train binding", so I wonder if the gear assembly inside has problems as well.. My mechanic basically doesn't want to deal with me, gives me the brush off. This may be because I am a nice guy, so he can get away with being rude, and I ask questions, which takes time, I understand. . He can turn around and be nice, but he just wont give me enough time to make informed decisions. He's running a shop with many employees under him. And the only game in town, basically. I have been in touch with Valley Hybrid as well. They are helping. Thank you very much for that tip. I may get a transfer case from them. They want $600, which feels a bit steep, plus another 150 shipping, Did you say you had a VC? Do you know the part number for the transfer case? Is it 36130-60460? Or is that only for 91-93 LC's? Thank you very much.

With all due respect, we do know the problem- "drive train binding"- that's what II mean by "back end kicks out " on slow turns,so, I think, my mechanic thinks, and my AI, perplexity "thinks", its a failed VC. In addition, there may be other problems, like a ABS sensor out, U joints in the drive train with problems, who knows if the differential gears inside the TC are damaged; a power steering pump that may need replacing- doubt the groaning or difficulty steering will go away when the TC is repaired., but we could see...,, but at least one problem originates in the transfer case, which in the past did leak, was sealed, and didn't leak again. I very much appreciate your help. How does one tell which ABS sensor is out, with a voltmeter at the wheel itself?

my mechanic has diagnosed it as the VC- but he insists that taking it out will not fix the problem @Themcfarland : I had him change all th fluids in the car. he did the TC as wewll, no change. @jonheld Valley hybrid is offering me a used TC for $600. I wonder if one can get a rebuilt one. Is that better?

I'm sorry, but nothing in this thread makes any sense to me.
FIND ANOTHER MECHANIC!!!

1. "Mechanic" diagnosed a bad VC and then says that removing it won't "fix" the problem. If that's the case, then the issue is not the VC or the "mechanic" doesn't know what he's talking about.

2. "Mechanic" doesn't want to deal with you or your vehicle and gives you the brush off.

There is a Land Cruiser chapter in NM. Reach out to them and get a recommendation for someone who is familiar with an 80 Series. Land Cruiser folks tend to be very helpful. Maybe someone would be willing to put eyes on your vehicle or possible take it for a test drive and/or do some real diagnosis as opposed to dicking around with a "mechanic" that can't be bothered with you.

Believe me, I wish I could, He's the only game in town. Although I have not communicated well with hiim, or you . ( so m not a good communicator, I guess), it s clear that this is the Viscous coupler. He did do a diagnosis. As above, there may be more issues that were caused by the "drive train binding," or just additional issues. How do I find a Land Cruiser chapter in New Mexico?

What is the point in sticking to a mechanic that doesn't know what he is doing?
he does know what he is doing. However, there is no one else here. His company has off road in the name and has been in business the life of the LC, i am only owner. He just is singularly uncommunicative.

If your truck has a CDL switch you can always just pull the VC from the rear housing of the TC. The VC on my 97 was locked up when I got it and the difference was night and day once the appendectomy was complete. It took me about 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon to pull it. You will know if that was the issue before you drive around the block. IIRC it’s not a serviceable part so you can decide whether or not you want to replace it.

Diagnosing a bad VC and then saying the removal of it will not fix the problem is indicative of knowing what he is doing? Great, I'll file an LLC with Off Road in the name and make a living swapping parts on your dime too.

i dont know why he insists that taking out the VC will not solve the problem, as i said, he is preemptory- wont let me make an informed decision- perhaps he is bipolar- but truthfully , he is an excellent mechanic- the shop has been in business for many years ( 30+), and i have been going for 30. Enough with the snide remarks everybody, II realize i dont explain things well, and yes of course, there could be more problems but one is surely a seized up VC, whether more is wrong in the transfer case we dont know, im going to replace the whole TC.

This feels like trolling to me. The OP started a similar thread on another LC forum. Ignores all advice. Keeps reposting the same nonsensical info.

Definitely not trolling. In fact, I have taken advice from several people. I ordered a TC from Valley Hybrid as recommended above. I simply point out that my mechanic, who is quite competent, for over 35 years and owns an off-road shop, does not agree with people who say taking out the VC will stop the "driveline binding". In point of fact, it is several people who keep making irritated comments to the effect of that I should get another mechanic ( when I have explained that he is the only mechanic in town over and over again). who are trolling me, If I am repeating myself, it is because I am answering people as they come. As for posting on a different forum, that is because I was looking for a VC, which are hard to find. I found several now through this forum, and am about to buy one for backup.

Then I apologise and hope you get it sorted.
