So pulling the valve covers off today to change leaking gaskets and checked valve gap on passenger side cyl 2 4 6 8 2000LC with 170,000.

Valve Clearance per FSM cold

Intake : 0.015mm - 0.025mm
0.006in - 0.010in

Exhaust : 0.25mm - 0.35mm
0.010in - 0.014in

pic 1 cyl #8 intake and cyl #6 exhaust are very close to being at same cam lobe angle
pic 2 took readings at both these locations then rotated engine. (intake shown)
pic 3 cyl #6 intake and cyl #2 exhaust are very similar cam lobe angle, took readings rotated engine
pic 4 took reading at both locations then rotated engine (intake shown)

Other notes:

cyl #2 intake and cyl #4 exhaust also seem to be in similar cam lobe angle
cyl #4 intake and cyl #8 exhaust cam lobe does not seem to line up with any of the other cylinders or each other
Did not take any exhaust cam reading pictures

My readings

Intake #2 0.008
#4 0.008
#6 0.008
#8 0.007

Exhaust #2 0.010
#4 0.011
#6 0.010
#8 0.010

Took readings on cam lobe in both locations on the intake and exhaust cylinders, the readings always matched for me

would love to see what others come up with for readings

Based on those figures are you going to install shims to get back in spec?

Edit- just realized you posted your specs in imperial not metric. Doh!

Gap looks good and fairly even (balanced). The exhaust are at tight-end of limit but certainly no need to adjust.

Did you ever find the measurements for DS?

BTW; head looks clean, synthetic oil right!

Thanks for posting.

I checked the drivers side last year at 155k. However Last year I did it quick and dirty and didn't check cam lobe at 180 degrees from gap so numbers may not have been as accurate

Intake 0.006
Exhaust 0.010
Tight as well

M1 full syn being used currently.

Other notes purchased truck at 148k, previous owner used Dino oil and was not good with maintenance

Awesome Sean!

Abuck, all look to be in spec to me.
I just realized his readings were taken in imperial not metric, and I was looking at the metric FSM numbers thinking, dang those are way off.

Just had heads rebuilt and my engine runs loud now. New gaskets. I want to pull the valve covers and check valve gap. Do the gaskets need to be replaced when I do that?

Gaskets & seals, should always be replace. But you can certainly try reusing. But inspect closely. Worst case they leak a little and you re-do.

Heads rebuilt. Included cleaning, inspecting, blue printing, milling, grinding, lapping and gapping. The gapping, is installing proper thickness of shim in bucket. This is done last. So they should be good, if a good machine shop did the job.

Sometimes, we listen or pay closer attention after a service done. Some tapping sound may have been there all along. One that sound very much valve gap tap. Is fuel injectors. They're loud!

One easy way to determine if injectors, are the tap. Go into tech stream. Find fuel injectors and change from 0 to full lean then full rich. Liston as you do. Any change in sound, to loud sound you hear. Then it is injector you're hearing. Value gap (bucket to cam lobe) sound, will not noticeable change while doing this. Since RPMs, only change a tad.

Who installed the heads? Were head bolts reused? Is it running good?

BTW: It be nice if you go back and update your, blew a spark plug thread.

Thanks. I’ll go update that thread with all the details about my head rebuild this weekend including photos and a video of it running.
