f**ked when you need to replace seat gears. No wonder no one replied to my original post. It's basically impossible.

First of all, it can't be done properly without total disassembly of the seat rails, including removing the extensions and all related hardware down to bare bones.

It may have been done before, but by someone with more patience than I have. Three hours the first try. Five hours the second try. Four hours today. This is a seriously screwed up arrangement. Three cracked Gamiviti gears and no luck. I heard every one of those little bastards crack the minute I hit the motor control on the seat for fore and aft. That means backwards and forward adjustment.

Whoever the guy in GA was that said he had some spare seat parts please contact me. I'm pulling the seat extension stuff and going back to stock. I don't drive the damn thing anymore anyway. I just work on it; over and over and over and over again.

Yes I am an 80 Hater right now. If I were on set of the Hateful Eight I would demolish the MF thing with about 50 rounds of APIT with gas cans and propane tanks added for good measure.

Time to drink cold beverages.

I hear ya'. Don't have the extensions but those little gears have been the bane of my life. The PHH swap was preferred to this.

So, you are saying the gears are no good because you have the extension? Maybe your gears are cracking because your gears are not lined up correctly?

No - you can't remove the worm gears with the seat rail extensions installed. You have to push, pry, bend, bust your knuckles and get the gear housings back in place by bending the front drive cable and housing. Simple as that. I could live without the gears cracking. No further comment.

You should just sell it. Is it rust free? I'm interested. Got any pics? :flipoff2:

Never understood the power-seat thing; manuals are lighter, faster, and don't fail. If you want leather, cover 'em in leather.

Why don't you just get rid of the $hitty factory seats and get something better. I drove 8 hours to Colorado without a single seat gear breaking on my WRX seats (shameless plug) then drove 8 hours back. My 6'2'' frame had so much room with my custom sliders (another shameless plug) that I actually didn't run the seat all the way back because its too far !!!!! But really, there are some options out there, go get something else and stop messing with the OEM.

What sliders do you have for your WRX seats?

Interesting thread and timely. I was planning to order replacement gears from CruiserDan tomorrow morning. I probably still will because I don't have the seat extensions but I was expecting a rather easy installment based on a friend's comments. Sounds like my expectations were BS.

It will be easy without the rail extensions. I could have done eight trucks with normal seats in the time I spent on this one. Don't let this scare you away. The extensions are the problem.

As to why I don't replace the seat - it ( they ) were just recovered in new Atlas leather last year and for those who asked, no it doesn't have rust and I may very well sell the thing when I solve this snake bite. I'm too old for this crap.

I'll take it off your hands. And I have a spare set of manual seats so you don't even need to fix it first!! :bounce2:

Don't let this frustration build up to the point you sell your truck. The 80 is the last solid axle Toyota and it has the largest, most solid axles and drive shafts ever produced for a Toyota. As such, it is likely the most trail-worthy truck available. I had a friend sell his several years ago and he regrets it to this day!

Get over your frustration from this project and then make a decision that is not clouded by anger!

I feel your pain and frustration but honestly, if you are this enraged (to the point of wanting to destroy or sell your rig) over such a small issue, maybe a 20 year old truck isn't for you.

Nah - everybody has to have a good rant now and then. No way I would destroy it, but it is fun to blow up old junk vehicles. I get even more pissed off every time the antennae cable breaks. LOL

I have been in touch with Rick and I may be over-looking a relatively simple, albeit time consuming solution. The new ones that ship from AJIK are designed different than mine from early 2008. New ones are semi decent to get out of the way. I gotta pull my seat and look at the extension mountings more closely.

FYI - I got stuff that's older than 20 years hanging around that I still work on.

Before I followed @half k cruiser and put in other seats, I adapted and welded on extenders, that you can still change out gears like stock. I should know, as I swapped out gears after the swap.

For Sale: - 80 series seat extension complete setup base

By the way, the seat upgrade is the best improvement I ever did. -- well maybe not the supercharger....

Man - how do you get mud on the seat rails. This I gotta hear...
